    Notes: A kinetic model employing calculated atom and bond localization energies to approximate relative activation energies of reaction is used to analyse previously obtained experimental results for in vitro and in vivo chemical binding of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to nucleic acids. It is found that in vitro linkage of hydrocarbons to DNA induced by a microsomal hydroxylating system is compatible with mechanisms involving either attack at the most reactive hydrocarbon center or attack at the most reactive hydrocarbon bond. Independent evidence leads us to favor the former mechanism. Further, the limited experimental data for in vivo linkage of hydrocarbons to DNA is found to be consistent with a model involving attack at the most reactive bond of the molecule: the “K region”. This model is supported by a close parallelism found between extent of hydrocarbons bound to DNA in vivo and the experimentally determined relative reactivities of their K regions.

    Description / Table of Contents: Es wurde die Gelbildung bei Reaktionen von Triolen mit Dicarbonsäuredichloriden für verschiedene Verdünnungsgrade untersucht. Die Reaktionen wurden zwischen Adipolydichlorid bzw. Sebacoyldichlorid und Triolen von verschiedenen Molekulargewichten durchgeführt. Die Reaktionspaare wurden so ausgewählt, daß die Reaktionssysteme durch eine Skala von v-Werten gekennzeichnet waren, wobei v gleich der Zahl der Bindungen in der kleinstmöglichen Ringstruktur ist. In allen Fällen fand die Gelbildung bei Reaktionsumsätzen statt, die höher waren als von der Theorie von Flory-Stockmayer vorausgesagt wird. Das Ausmaß dieser Erhöhung wurde größer bei Verdünnung, und kleiner bei größeren v-Werten.Die Resultate werden mit einer Kombination der Gelbildungstheorien von Frisch und Kilb interpretiert, in der λ, der intramolekulare Verzweigungsparameter von Frisch, gegeben ist durch die Gleichung λ = konst. v-3/2 {(OH)0+(COCl)0}-1.
    Notes: Gelation in reactions of triols with dicarboxylic acid dichlorides was studied at various dilutions. Adipoyl dichloride and sebacoyl dichloride were reacted with three triols of different molecular weights. The pairs of reactants were chosen so that the reaction systems were characterised by a range of values of v, the number of bonds in the smallest ring structure which could form. In all cases gelation occurred at extents of reaction in excess of those predicted by the Flory-Stockmayer theory. The excess reaction increased with dilution, and decreased with increase in v.The results are interpreted in terms of a combination of Frisch's and Kilb's theories of gelation, in which λ, the intramolecular branching parameter of Frisch, is given by the equation λ = const. v-3/2{(OH)0+(COCl)0}-1.

    Notes: An analytical technique based on the method of least squares has been developed to fit experimental second virial coefficients to the functional form derived from the Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential. Both the functional form and the normal equations of the least squares fit are rigorously derived. Because of the implicit, nonlinear dependence upon one of the adjustable parameters, a computer solution of the normal equations is required. Second virial coefficient data for a large number (60) of materials, including hydrocarbons, halides, alcohols, and cyclic compounds, have been extracted from published sources, carefully evaluated for consistency, and fitted to the Lennard-Jones potential function.Force constants for these materials as determined from fitting the data in this uniform manner have been found to be related to structural parameters. The final correlation, with the potential well-depth related to critical temperature and the collision diameter calculated from a set of group contributions with appropriate corrections for polarity and/or association, produces average deviations between computed and experimental second virial coefficients of 10 to 15% or 100 cc./g.-mole, whichever is greater. In many cases the agreement is much better.

    Notes: Heat transfer in packed beds can be mathematically modeled to account for the heat transfer between the particles and the gas phase, the conduction through the solid phase of particles, and the mixing or dispersion within the gas phase in the void structure of the porous media. To solve the resulting differential equations numerically is not easy. The solution for sinusoidal gas temperature input assumes linearity of the logarithm of the temperature with time. If, in addition, linearity with distance can be assumed, then the solution can be vastly simplified to finding the real root of a fourth-order algebraic equation.

    Notes: Microconductivity probes were used for the measurement of point values of mean concentrations and root-mean-square concentration fluctuations for mixing of salt solutions in turbulent shear flows. Mixing studies covered a range of flow conditions, with Reynolds numbers on the order of 104, and included ducted turbulent jets, dispersion in turbulent pipe flow, a plane mixing zone, and several multiple injection systems. The test sections all had characteristic dimensions of about 2 cm. The results for mixing experiments are compared with available previous work. Lack of resolution for root-mean-square concentration fluctuations in some previous work is indicated.Reaction product concentrations for a rapid, second-order, irreversible reaction in multiple injection systems, the plane jet, and the mixing zone were also obtained. The relation between conversion in reaction experiments and fluctuation level and decay in the equivalent mixing experiments is illustrated.

    Notes: The pressure dependence of the elastic constants of various halides, hard tissues and synthetic apatites have been examined in the 0- to 50-kilobar range using a solid media, pressure apparatus coupled with an ultrasonic interferometer. The samples includ: hydroxy-, fluor-, and chlor-apatite, NaCl, CaF2, mollusc shell (aragonite), ivory, dentin and enamel, and fish, bovine, and human bones. High pressures were used in order to assess the effects of porosity in aggregate samples and to make measurements on specimens of ideal density. Computer analysis of the measured longitudinal and shear ultrasonic velocities yields the pressure dependence of the bulk, shear, and Young's moduli and Poisson's ratio. Atmospheric pressure values at ideal density are obtained by back extrapolation from the high pressure measurements.

    Notes: Some of the cells of every human being will grow outside the body as microorganisms. It is possible to show, in a variety of ways, that these cells resemble genetically the individual from whom they were obtained. Over 35 inherited human diseases and anomalies can now be studied in such cell lines.Human diploid cell strains, biochemically marked by one or more mutant Mendelian genes, have proven particularly useful for the study of gene action in man and for the detection of genetic changes such as mutation and somatic cell hybridization. In addition, the strains have a number of clinical applications, including the antenatal diagnosis of inherited disease.The failure of cultured human cells to display their phenotype at most loci continues to restrict their use in both genetics and medicine. There are reasons for hoping that this difficulty will eventually be solved, and some experiments bearing on the problem are already feasible.

    Notes: This basic introductory discussion has sought to outline the embryology and development of bone and has stressed both its function and structure. I have, also, outlined the sequence of fracture healing and discussed some of the problems of implant acceptance in the musculoskeletal system. With this information, I hope you as basic scientists will be able to better understand some of the problems our patients pose with respect to implant design and function. It should be reiterated that many men have contributed to this very vital and important field of Orthopedic Surgery. Moreover, I would like to stress that not withstanding the complications previously discussed, the availability of biologic and metallic implants has contributed immensely to the high level of patient care we know today; and they have a very important role in the future improvement of our ability to care for our patients.
