    Description: A guide to the expected characteristics of the space telescope (ST) observatory is presented. The general objectives of the ST observatory are summarized. The plans for the development of the observatory are described with a brief history of the scientific activities; an account of the scope of the present program; a summary of the major responsibilities of the contractors; and a list of the project milestones are included. The performance characteristics of the observatory are provided including the imaging and stray light characteristics, pointing capability, and operational access. The expected performance characteristics of all six of the first generation science instruments are summarized. The mode of operations is described which includes a discussion of program options, guide star selection, methods of acquisition, and quick look data capabilities.

    Description: The spectrum of comet West (1975 n) was recorded on March 7 and 11, 1976, in the wavelength interval from 5700 to 8200 A at an intermediate resolution. One hundred twenty-two emission lines are reported, with 78 lines having identifications with spectral features of NH2, H2O(+), C2, O I forbidden emission, and Na I.

    Description: The experiments considered are in two groups: on-board experiments and overboard experiments. The on-board experiments include the determination of bulk properties and processes (within solids) and observations of exposure panels (near surface phenomena) The overboard experiments consist of analysis of gas/dust shells by observation from the shuttle and observation by sub-satellites. Experimental parameters are discussed with emphasis on work that is unique to low gravity and high vacuum environments.

    Description: Swan-band emission from the C2 molecule provides important information for a study of the physical processes occurring in comets. It is, therefore, a disturbing factor that many quantitative Swan-band observations are in clear contradiction of predictions of resonance fluorescence excitation of the Swan bands. A description is presented of an investigation involving an application of resonance fluorescence theory to C2. The investigation takes into account all important electronic transitions which determine the population distribution of the lowest energy states. It is found that the previous discrepancy for the brighter band sequences disappears.

    Description: Statistical equilibrium calculations have been made for both the triplet and ground state singlets for C2 in comets, using the exchange rate as a free parameter. The predictions of the results are consistent with optical observations and may be tested definitively by accurate observations of the Phillips and Swan band ratios. Comparison with the one reported observation indicates compatibility with a low exchange rate and resonance fluorescence statistical equilibrium.

    Description: Observational results are brought together to establish the mass loss of Comet Kohoutek (1973 XII) in H2O, solid particles, and other molecules. The production rate of molecules is seen to have flattened prior to peaking near perihelion passage, and then fell below the rate for the incoming branch of the orbit. The total mass loss was about 10 to the 14th power gm. All abundances are consistent with a clathrate-dominant form of water. Comparison of the sizes of the nucleus as calculated from photometry and the rate of water loss requires that either an unrealistically high albedo be assumed or that only a portion of the nucleus was covered by water, in contrast with previous expectations for a new and probable first-passage comet. Moreover, if the preperihelion estimates of the nuclear brightness are rejected as being contaminated, the resulting values indicate an ice-covered nucleus with a radius of 2.1 km.
