Notes: Abstract The thermodynamic parameters $$\Delta \bar H, \Delta \bar G, \Delta \bar S_{298} $$ and lg βn resp. of the reactions indicated in the title have been computed from polarographic data. The numerical values obtained are nearly independent from the xanthate used. The overall formation constants increase as follows: Zn(II)〈Cd(II)〈Hg(II). This order of stability corresponds to the increase of soft acid character of the central atom which determines the strength of the metal—S bond.

Notes: Summary Hybrids obtained from two series of diallel crosses made between six o 2 converted inbred lines on the one hand and their normal analogues on the other were compared for twenty-five characters including yield and several of the yield components, including the parents. Observations on simple inter-character correlation coefficients presented here have shown that the majority of the correlations at the o 2 level are of the same order as at the normal level. A number of correlations of the o 2 type are inferior to those of their normal analogues, whereas a few are favoured by the o 2 gene including the correlation of grain yield with kernels per row. A measure of heterosis for each hybrid over its mid-parent also demonstrated that the o 2 types show poorer heterosis in more cases than do their normal counterparts. Still, in nearly 40 percent of the cases the o 2 hybrids were found to be more heterotic than their normal analogues, particularly for the various maturity characters and several of the yield components. Thus, the possibility of improvement exists in breeding maize with the opaque-2 gene.

Notes: Summary Diallel cross hybrids obtained by crossing six opaque-2 (o 2) converted inbred lines were compared with a similar series of crosses made between the analogous normal inbred lines together with the parents, for a number of protein quality and oil traits. The results obtained show that there is only a minor decrease in percent protein or yield of protein per hectare caused by the presence of the o 2 gene in recessive homozygous condition, compared with its normal counterpart. On the other hand, percent lysine in the whole kernel, lysine yield per hectare and percent lysine in protein are increased by 53, 45 and 55 percent, respectively, in the o 2 inbred lines and hybrids compared with their normal analogues. Percent oil and oil yield remain almost unaltered by the presence or absence of the o 2 gene. As well as lysine, the content of other amino acids, such as aspartic acid, arginine, glycine, threonine, valine and histidine are also, in general, increased by the presence of the o 2 gene in recessive homozygous condition. The results obtained have shown that a number of correlation coefficients between the protein quality traits and yield components related to kernel characteristics are negative and significant, especially in the presence of the o 2 gene in recessive homozygous condition. Only two correlation coefficients have been found that could be used with advantage by opaque-2 maize breeders. They are a stronger positive correlation of percent protein with percent lysine, and lysine yield per hectare with 1000 grain weight, in o 2 maize than in normal maize. The results presented here also show that there is more heterotic dilution in the o 2 hybrids than in the normal analogues for traits like percent protein, percent lysine (whole kernel basis) and percent lysine in protein. It has been observed that the inbred lines with the o 2 gene in recessive homozygous condition and a superior protein quality tend to produce hybrids of superior quality.

Notes: Summary Various opaque-2 and analogous normal single, 3-way and double crosses and their parents have been compared for their ability to germinate at low temperatures in cold tests. It has been found that the o 2 types are nearly 35% inferior to their normal analogues in their cold tolerance. The difference is statistically highly significant. Also the percent emergence and the time of germination both are affected adversely by the presence of the o 2 gene in recessive homozygous condition. The results are discussed in the light of, first, the pleotropic effects of the o 2 gene, second, the thicker pericarp of the o 2 kernels and third, the later maturity of the o 2 grains possessing a higher grain moisture at the time of harvest than their normal analogues.

Notes: Abstract The decomposition processes taking place in the Al-4.5 at % Zn-2 to 3 at % Mg alloys were studied during continuous heating by means of electrical resistivity, XSAS and DSC measurements and by TEM investigations. It was found that the room temperature pre-ageing has no significant influence on the processes taking place above 230° C. Several temperature ranges were determined in which the decomposition of the solid solution and/or the transformation of the different particles of the second phases take place by different mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract The decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution of an Al-3.2wt% Zn-2.2 wt% Mg alloy has been investigated in the temperature of 20 to 200° C, by small-angle X-ray scattering, electrical resistivity and mechanical measurements. On the basis of the results obtained, three subsequent stages of the decomposition process can be distinguished. Between 20 and 70° the basic process is the nucleation and growth of G.P. zones, the volume fraction of which increases logarithmically with time. A transition stage is observed between 80 and 100° in which the volume fraction increases linearly with time. Above 90° C, the growth kinetics of the volume fraction shows a definite incubation period at the beginning of ageing, while the yield stress increases monotonically. In the temperature range 100 to 160° C, the formation of theη′ phase takes place. Below 100° a linear connection between the yield stress and (fR)1/2 is found from which the specific surface energy to cut a G.P. zone is calculated to be Γ0= 0.21 Nm m−2.

Notes: Abstract This review surveys present knowledge of the nature and behaviour of point defects, especially vacancies. The general theoretical concepts and various experimental observations connected with the formation and mobility of vacancies and their complexes, their effect on the physical properties of metals, are described. The formation of secondary defects by vacancy condensation, the interaction between vacancies and solute atoms and some general ideas about point defects, are also discussed in detail.
