    Notes: The stress-cracking of polycarbonate by a gaseous or liquid agent results from the diffusion of this agent into the polymer. The low molecular weight polymer fractions and the chain ends within the bulk of the polymer become more ordered during the diffusion and swelling process by their partial solubility in the crazing agent, causing crystallization. The creation of interfaces at areas of order-disorder causes high shearing forces at this boundary and voids within the bulk of the polymer. These voids are then propagated as crazes or cracks at stresses much lower than the tensile strength of the polymer. Therefore, a stress-cracking agent need not diffuse rapidly, but must be an effective environment for swelling and/or crystallization. Data from diffusion, density, thermal and molecular analyses are presented to support this mechanism.

    Notes: A series of squirrel monkeys received segmental femoral replacements in a study of the strength of the interface developed between the implant and bone. Implants were either made completely of bioglass-ceramic, or 316L stainless steel with a flame-prayed coating of bioglass. Fracture torque, energy at fracture, and shear stress at failure were compared to values obtained from a control group of pairs of tibias. Femurs containing bulk bioglassceramic implants showed about a 25% difference in strength compared to the opposite bone, while femurs containing flame-sprayed implants exhibited extremely low structural strength. While the strength of the metal-glass bond was very low (〈500 kgf/cm2), the bonebioglass bond was found to be at least as strong as the bioglass-ceramic, and at least 3/4 as strong as the host bone.

    Notes: The thermal responses of various polyurethane elastomers in the form of changes in heat capacity, linear expansion, and tensile strain have been examined. Most of the change which can be attributed to the backbone of polyethylene adipate, found in several modes of thermal analysis, are still apparent, though shifted somewhat, among most of the diisocyanate extended elastomers used in this study. Tolylene diisocyanate extension changes the modulus properties markedly, low modulus properties being observed at ambient temperatures. Both hydrogenated MDI and MDI elastomers show comparable expansion and modulus response, whereas the hydrogenated TDI elastomer does not have the same characteristics as TDI-based elastomers. The thermal properties of the hydrogenated TDI elastomer resemble more those exhibited by the polyol mixture extended with hexamethylene diisocyanate, and in addition this latter elastomer exhibits more crystallinity, as shown by the large endotherm in the specific heat measurement. The structure of the diisocyanate naturally changes the behavior of the hard segment.
