    Description: Initial results of the electric and magnetic field observations from the DE-2 satellite show a remarkably good correlation between the north-south component of the electric field and the east-west component of the magnetic field in many passes of the field-aligned current regions. For a dayside cusp pass on August 15, 1981 the coefficient of correlation between these components was 0.996. A preliminary inspection of the available data from the first 6 months of the DE operation indicates that the similarity between the electric and magnetic field signatures of the field-aligned currents is a commonly observed feature at all local times. This high correlation is interpreted to be an indication that the closure of the field-aligned current is essentially meridional. When the correlation between these components is not good, the closure current is likely to be flowing along the auroral belt. When the correlation between the electric and magnetic fields is high, it is possible to estimate the height-integrated Pedersen conductivity from the observed field components.

    Description: Magnetic field observations are conducted on each of the DE-A and -B satellites by a triaxial fluxgate magnetometer. In the basic mode the instrumental resolution is + or - 1.5 nT; in addition, the DE-A magnetometer has two modes of higher resolution: + or - 0.25 nT and + or - 20 pT. The sampling rate is 16 vector samples per second in all modes. The experiment objectives include observations of field-aligned currents, magnetospheric equatorial currents, and ULF waves. These observations, taking full advantage of the specifically selected orbits of the two spacecraft and of the unique combination of instruments, are performed to achieve a better understanding of the electrodynamic coupling within the atmosphere-ionosphere-magnetosphere system and of wave-particle interactions which contribute to the coupling processes.

    Description: Observations made from space (Explorer 45) near L = 4.5 and from magnetic observatories on the ground of the large-amplitude ULF pulsations that followed the unusually strong compression of the earth's magnetosphere associated with the geomagnetic storm of August 1972 are analyzed. A spectral analysis of Explorer 45 magnetometer data indicates a compressional mode oscillation coupled to a transverse mode oscillation. Enhancements in amplitude of a 300-s period wave near 0040 UT August 5 are found to coincide with an intensification of 100- to 1000-Hz magnetic and electric field oscillations and with the appearance of fluxes of energetic ions. It is noted that during this period the ion pitch angle distribution in each available energy channel (24-300 keV) followed a periodic sequence, apparently synchronized with the magnetic pulsations, from normal trapping (highest fluxes near 90 deg and lowest near 0 deg and 180 deg) to a nearly isotropic particle distribution. It is found that during the transitions the particle flux near 90 deg pitch angle was alternately large earthward of the satellite (before isotropy) and larger radially outward from the satellite (after isotropy).

    Description: The paper discusses a Nike-Tomahawk rocket launched north over quiet, late evening auroral arcs in March 1975. A northward magnetic disturbance was observed on the ground under the rocket trajectory; south of the arcs the northward electric field was 60 mV/m, indicating strong westward plasma flow. An eastward electrojet current layer was penetrated in the upward flight, and precipitating electrons were observed over each arc. Using the observed electron flux and a model of the ionosphere, the Hall and Pedersen conductivities were calculated which were used to compute the eastward and northward components of the horizontal ionospheric currents. The joule power decreased abruptly in the auroral arcs, as the precipitating electron power increased; the total dissipated power was the same inside the arcs, between them and southward. North of the aurora the electric field and dissipated power remained low; field-aligned currents carried by the observed electrons were about a factor of 3 lower than those inferred from the magnetic field measurements.

    Description: The ion drift technique of measuring ionospheric electric fields is compared to two other simultaneous measurements. Rocket measurements in the evening auroral oval are checked against a dual probe, also in situ, and the ground based STARE auroral radar. The technique is explained thoroughly as well as tested for its dependence on mass. Two evening auroral oval conditions were observed from Andoya, Norway in January and February 1977. The first flight, 18:1005, measured electric fields over a quiet pre-midnight discrete arc. An interesting plasma convection reversal was observed poleward of the arc. The subsequent 18:1004, samples a breakup phase aurora nearer local midnight.

    Description: Phase velocities of plasma waves near the lower hybrid frequency were measured with an interferometer composed of two spatially separated electron-density probes. The plasma waves were produced in the F-region ionosphere by an argon ion beam. By calculating the normalized cross spectrum of the plasma waves a coherency of .98 was estimated along with a maximum phase difference of pi/3 radians between the two probes. This implies that the wavelength was 6 meters compared to an O(+) gyroradius of 3.8 meters, and that the phase velocity was 45 km/sec compared to an ion-beam velocity of 12.4 km/sec. These numbers compare favorably with recent predictions of a nonresonant mode produced by a dense ion beam.

    Description: For three magnetically disturbed days in early 1980, data from south polar masses of the Magsat satellite are compared with data from search coil magnetometer, riometer, and photometer instrumentation at Siple, Antarctica. It is found that during each Magsat polar pass in the morning sector, the level of Pi 1 activity correlates well with the intensities of three-dimensional current systems. Fine structure is often observed in the field-aligned currents during periods of intense Pi activity. Among the Birkeland currents are 2-s to 10-s (16-80 km) structured perturbations; these are evident in the transverse components of the field and are thought to indicate filamentary currents. Pi 1 amplitudes are found to be considerably larger when region 2 Birkeland currents are overhead than when they are not. In one case, detailed features are identified in the high-resolution Magsat magnetic field data that may be current fluctuations related to asymmetric Pi 1.

    Description: Results are reported for the perturbation of the auroral ionosphere by the operation of an ion gun which injected about 100 mA of 25-eV Ar(+) ions at upgoing pitch angles over a discrete auroral arc. The major effects observed were the excitation of intense broadband electric field fluctuations at zero-10 kHz, and the appearance of streaming and isotropic heating in different parts of superthermal electron velocity space. A scenario is explored in which electron runaway or streaming is expected between the trapping speed and the critical velocity for cyclotron interactions with the waves, where the streaming electrons carry the current that would be carried by thermals or energetic electrons in the absence of the waves. A current of about 1.0 microA/sq m is carried by the streaming electrons. The gun-associated electrons were anomalous in the sense that their anisotropy was the opposite of that observed in the natural aurora.
