Description / Table of Contents: Summary In anodic oxidation of phenol on a “microrough” polished glass-carbon electrode by means of cyclic and potential step voltametry, five low molecular weight reaction products can be detected: o,p′- and p,p′-biphenyl, hydroquinone, pyrocatechol and hydroxyhydroquinone. It is shown that all products arise from the dimerization of the phenoxy radical resulting from the one-electron oxidation of phenol. However, dimerization or hydroxylation of α-naphthol results from one-electron or two-electron oxidation. The difference is explained by the different energy of the abolition of a ring resonance in phenol or naphthol. Two different types of anodic hydroxylation of phenol bodies can be recognized: radical, ionic and additive hydroxylation.
