Notes: Abstract A method for measuring volatile fatty acids using ion-exclusion chromatography is presented. The system was found to be applicable to samples with high salt concentrations (e.g. seawater and marine pore water) when coupled with a vacuum distillation procedure. The method is straightforward, with no sample preconcentration and no introduction of external contamination. Calibration was found to be linear, with good reproducibility (coefficient of variation normally less than 5%) and the system was sufficiently sensitive to operate at the sub-ppm level (minimum detection limit for acetate and propionate was approximately 0.02 and 0.05 ppm, respectively). This technique was used to investigate the distribution of volatile fatty acids with sediment depth at Station E70 in Loch Eil, Scotland (sample was collected in March, 1983) and the results were in good agreement with recent publications. Although the system, at present, is limited in marine pore water to acetate and propionate, it has certain advantages over alternative systems and these are described.

Notes: Abstract Exciting with picosecond pulses from a mode locked cw dye laser and using the Synchroscan continuously operating streak camera, the variation in the fluorescence lifetime with viscosity over the range 0.5 cp–250 cp of some mode locking and potential mode locking polymethine dyes of the cyanine family were investigated. The measured lifetimes were found to follow a ∼2/3 or 1/3 power dependence of the viscosity η.

Notes: Abstract Chinese hamster ovary cells grown in medium containing 10 μM 5-fluorodeoxycytidine for forty-eight hours were found to have up to 5% of the deoxycytidine residues of the DNA substituted by this analog. Cytological studies of these cells showed that the incorporated 5-FdC caused a two-fold increase of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) over the control level. However, 5-FdC was capable of inducing SCE only after it had been present in the cell for at least two cycles of DNA synthesis. This is in contrast to several other chemicals that we have tested which induced SCE immediately after the first DNA synthesis. We consider the possibility that the delayed effect may be related to hypomethylation of cytosine in the newly replicated DNA.

Notes: Abstract Cameras and lighting techniques which allow photographs to be taken of such water jet flow details as surface waves, transition, and spray eruption, as well as the various jet instability mechanisms, are described. While originally developed for very specialized cameras, many of the techniques can be adapted to conventional cameras. and other areas of research.

Notes: Abstract We consider the variational problem associated with the equilibrium shape of crystals resting on a table in a gravitational field. For two-dimensional crystals the shape can be calculated explicitly, i.e., reduced to quadrature. In three dimensions only qualitative results are available. The most interesting new result is that for large crystals, under suitable conditions, the top may be a corrugated facet or curved surface. The motivation for this work comes from lowtemperature experiments on helium crystals in equilibrium with the superfluid.

Notes: Summary This paper studies the parametric dependence of battle outcome (in particular, force annihilation) for combat between two homogeneous forces modelled by Lanchester-type equations of modern warfare with time-dependent attrition-rate coefficients. Force-annihilation prediction has been shown to depend on a so-called parity-condition parameter, which depends on only the attrition-rate coefficients. New important results are given on how the parity-condition parameter depends on the intensity of combat and the relative fire effectiveness of the combatants. Previous analytical results of the author are shown to apply to a much wider class of attrition-rate coefficients. These new results allow a wide class of Lanchester-type equations of modern warfare with temporal variations in fire effectiveness to be studied almost as easily as Lanchester's classic constant-coefficient model.

Notes: Abstract Desulfobacter sp. (Strain 3ac10), an acetate-utilizing sulphatereducing bacteria, was added to sterile marine pore water spiked with 14C-acetate, and changes in both the natural acetate pool and the added 14C-acetate were measured over time. Initially, both the added 14C-acetate and the chemically measured acetate were rapidly mineralized, but then the rate of removal decreased and a significant amount (approximately 20%) of both 14C-acetate and chemically measured acetate remained unmetabolised. In a replicate experiment, approximately 50% of the acetate was not metabolised. Kinetic analysis of the data indicated that there were two pools of acetate in the original pore water, a biologically available pool (which is rapidly metabolised) and a recalcitrant pool (which is only very slowly metabolised). Addition of 14C-acetate after the biologically available acetate had been removed resulted in rapid removal of the added acetate but no change in the recalcitrant acetate pool. The implications of this data to radiolabelled techniques of measuring in situ acetate turnover are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We analyze the problem of constructing supersymmetric versions of gauge theories of particles and of gravity which have a closed supersymmetric algebra. Inparticular we present the basic no-go theorems that indicate that in four dimensions it is not possible to construct suitably extended supersymmetric versions of the above theories without drastic modification of the supersymmetric algebra. Two ways past the“N=3” barrier are discussed; that of central charges involved highly constrained versions which appearn difficult to quantize effectively, while the use of light-cone variables seems to be the most promising. We give light-cone gauge versions of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories for all extended cases of interest and briefly consider their ultraviolet divergence properties.
