Notes: Abstract Pulsations of the lapse rate between 1 and 5 m were recorded on a sunny day over a field of tall weeds (z 0 ≈ 6 cm) and over a parking lot (z 0 ≈ 0.1 cm). The frequency distributions of values recorded every 2 sec in a 20 min span were nearly identical in the two environments. Values ranged from inversions of 0.75 °C to lapses of 1.75 °C. There was a tendency for a wider range of fluctuations in short time intervals in the weeds than over the smoother parking lot. The data suggest that these very short-periodic fluctuations were dynamically induced.

Notes: Abstract Stationary and mobile surveys of micrometeorological changes in the new town of Columbia, Maryland have been made since late 1967. These show the development, intensification, and expansion of an urban heat island. This phenomenon is principally attributable to the altered heat flux into and out of the soil caused by the change in surface characteristics. About half of the observed change of relative humidity can be assigned to decreased evapotranspiration as a result of replacing vegetation by stone and asphalt.

Notes: Summary A three-month survey of bedroom climate in the transition season from spring to summer in the Washington, D. C., area is presented. It showed nearly complete independence from outdoor conditions during the period when central heating was needed and windos were closed. Later in the season, with open windows, nocturnal temperature drop indoors averaged about 1.6° C, while humidity increased about 6%. As the season progressed evening conditions approached discomfort and exceeded the limit of sultriness several times. But with mechanical ventilation cooling powers and comfort numbers in the optimal zone could be re-established.

Notes: Summary Weekly statistics of rainfall occurrence in the North-Central United States show certain preferences for precipitation in early April and early June. Dry spells are most common in late October, Mid-November, Mid-December and at the end of the year. A northward migration of the rainy condition in spring and early summer is linked with a comparable motion of the jet stream. The possible connection of these spells with “singularities” elsewhere andBowen's rain statistics is discussed but no firm relations can be established.

Notes: Summary Unexploited diary sources show that a number of sunspot and auroral observations during the so-called “Maunder Minimum” of solar activity have escaped attention. There is good evidence that the basic solar rhythms were maintained. A reconstruction of northern hemisphere temperatures back to 1579 showed that, on a hemispheric basis, the “Maunder Minimum” was not particularly cold. The coldest decades were before (1600–1619) and particularly after (1800–1819) the “Maunder Minimum”. Spectral analysis shows that the sunspot rhythms contribute only little to the total variance.
