Notes: Summary An on-line respiratory quotient control system has been developed for the continuous cultivation of baker's yeast. This system is based on moving identification of the microbial dynamics. The optimal dilution rate that was selected as the control variable was determined by minimizing a performance index. Without resorting to complicated microbial analysis, a simple and practical moving model is obtained by continually updating the input and output data. The experimental results indicate the satisfactory controllability of the present system and the possible extention of the proposed method to other bioprocesses.

Notes: Summary Contrary to most polymer membranes, the membrane composed of poly(maleic acid-co-styrene)-poly(ethylene glycol)(PMS-PEG) complexes gives separation factor for CO2 to O2 smaller than 1. While the unit molar ratio reaches 1, the separation factor for CO2 to O2 exhibits a minium. The temperature dependence of CO2 permeability is larger than O2 permeability, i.e. the permeation activation energy of CO2 (16 kcal/mol) is larger than that of O2 (3 kcal/mol). The separation factor for CO2 to O2 increases with increasing temperature. A tentative explanation is proposed for the results.

Notes: Abstract Computer modeling and analysis techniques have been established to evaluate performance during rain, in a radome-enclosed system. Electromagnetic transmission line theory using raytracing techniques is presented to compute transmission loss. Comparisons between theory and measured results are documented. Variations in water film thickness versus look angle and the resulting effect on performance are discussed. Other performance effects in rain, such as depolarization and noise temperature, are included in the analysis. The differences in performance using hydrophobic and non-hydrophobic materials can easily be predicted. Hydrophobic membrane materials are available for use with a radome, which yield excellent electromagnetic performance, even at mm wave frequencies. Recent tests are discussed which substantiate enhanced radome performance during rain.

Notes: Abstract A 35 GHz millimeter-wave radar system has been studied for space debris tracking. The objective is to track the particles ranging in size from 4 mm to 80 mm up to a range of 25 km. The system requires various state-of-the-art technologies including phased arrays, monopulse tracking, pulse compression, high power transmitters, low noise receivers, and pulse integration signal processing techniques.

Notes: Abstract The design and performance of millimeter-wave microstrip/suspended-stripline end-coupled bandpass filters are presented. Filters in Ka-band (26.5 to 40 GHz) and W-band (75 to 110 GHz) using suspended-stripline and microstrip have been designed. Good agreement between the experimental results and those predicted theoretically was observed. Measured passband insertion losses of less than 1 and 0.5 dB have been achieved in W- and Ka-band, respectively. An extremely wideband waveguide-to-microstrip transition with an insertion loss of 0.25 dB over the full W-band is also presented.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the design and performance of various millimeter-wave printed-circuit filters and diplexers. These components include microstrip/suspended stripline and finline lowpass filters, capacitive-gap and inductive-iris-coupled bandpass filters, spurline bandstop filters, and finline diplexers. State-of-the-art performances from Ka-band (26.5 to 40 GHz) to D-band (110 to 170 GHz) have been obtained. Agreement between the measured and calculated results was also achieved.

Notes: Abstract The past decade has seen increased applications for millimeter waves both in commercial and defense activities. Conventional millimeter-wave solid-satate sources were built in waveguide, suspended stripline, and finline. Fabricating these components in microstrip provides advantages of light weight, small size, and low cost. This paper summarizes the recent developments in millimeter-wave microstrip solid-state sources and amplifiers. The design and performance of these components will be presented.

Notes: Abstract Using packaged GaAs varactor diodes, a high efficiency 46 to 92 GHz frequency doubler has been developed. Microstrip circuits have been used to match the input and output impedances presented by the diode. A conversion loss of 8 to 10 dB was measured. This doubler circuit is useful for W-band (75 to 110 GHz) integrated circuit receivers and transceivers. The use of microstrip circuit can drastically reduce the fabrication cost in addition to size and weight.
