Notes: Summary The immunohistochemical location of cathepsin L in rabbit soleus, plantaris and psoas muscles was investigated using the peroxidase-anti-peroxidase (PAP) technique. The amount of enzyme detected varied according to the fibre type, which were identified by histochemical staining of serial sections for succinate dehydrogenase and alkali-stable myosin ATPase. In the three muscles studied labelling was strongest in the highly oxidative fibres and weaker in the other fibre types with least staining in the fast white fibres. Immunoreactive cathepsin L appeared to be most concentrated at the periphery of muscle fibres, especially near to the nuclei, although some staining was seen throughout the fibres.

    Notes: Summary A measure μ on the unit squareI } I is doubly stochastic ifμ(A } I) = μ(I } A) = the Lebesgue measure ofA for every Lebesgue measurable subsetA ofI = [0, 1]. By the hairpinL ∪L −1, we mean the union of the graphs of an increasing homeomorphismL onI and its inverseL −1. By the latticework hairpin generated by a sequence {x n :n ∈ Z} such thatx n-1 〈 xn (n ∈ Z), $$\mathop {\lim }\limits_{n \to - \infty } $$ x n = 0 and $$\mathop {\lim }\limits_{n \to \infty } $$ x n = 1, we mean the hairpinL ∪L −1 , whereL is linear on [x n-1 ,x n ] andL(n) =x n-1 forn ∈ Z. In this note, a characterization of latticework hairpins which support doubly stochastic measures is given. This allows one to construct a variety of concrete examples of such measures. In particular, examples are given, disproving J. H. B. Kemperman's conjecture concerning a certain condition for the existence of doubly stochastic measures supported in hairpins.

Notes: Summary Seethoff and Shiflett [5] proved nice uniqueness theorems concerning doubly stochastic measures supported on the union of the graphs of two functions, but the existence theorems were more elusive. In this present paper, using a functional equations approach, not only uniqueness results but also existence theorems are obtained for doubly stochastic measures with support sets of the form g∪g-1 where g is an increasing homeomorphism of [0,1] onto itself such that g(x)〈x〉 whenever 0〈x〈1.

Notes: Abstract This paper examines the demand for broad money in West Germany, the Netherlands and France. We give an exposition of and apply the “general to specific” econometric modelling methodology which has been successful in modelling the demand for money in the U.K. We find stable short-run demand functions for each of the three countries examined, using a consistent data base previously published by other researchers. Each of the estimated short-run equations has a long-run or steady-state solution which is consistent with economic theory. For West Germany and the Netherlands we find long-run income elasticities of unity, which constrasts with the results of earlier studies.

Notes: Abstract Historically, computer models have grown in complexity, and consequently have become more difficult to use. At the same time there is a growing need for quick-response methods and techniques for broad-brush policy formulation and decision making. The personal computer and its attendant software offer new means for quantitative sketch planning. This paper illustrates two PC-based applications for quick-response exercises. These involve interactive mapping and data analysis methods for the appraisal and interpretation of transport data, and the development and use of eclectic models for systems analysis and scenario generation. The LAMM and DIAMONDS packages are described, and their use in data analysis is illustrated. The Trends Integrator Procedure (TIP) is used to formulate a simple but versatile model for investigation of developments in an urban retailing system. These packages all run on PC's and offer powerful and adaptive tools for improved transport planning.

Notes: Abstract When anhydrous EuCl3, GdCl3, DyCl3 or Eu2O3 are irradiated with fast neutrons and then dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid, small amounts of reducing species, believed to be divalent lanthanide cations, are revealed. The amount produced increases with the thermodynamic stability of the Ln2+ species /Eu〉Dy〉Gd〉/.
