Description: The HEAO 1 A-2 database on fast high energy X-ray transients was examined for any discernible regularities. The data were taken over the interval 1977-79 with six collimated multiwire, multilayer, proportional counters that had a sensitivity sufficient for detecting events lasting 1-5 sec at energies as low as 8-120 keV. The entire sky was surveyed completely three times in the observational period. Best-fit position, error box corners, mean transient flux and quiescent flux data are provided for all six of the type 3 events that were found. All the sources were within the Galaxy. The duration of the events ranged from 60-2000 sec. The limited number of events observed leads to estimates of 10,000-200,000 events per year. It is suggested that all the events originate from hard flares occurring at a rate of 20,000/yr on dMe/dKe stars.

Description: The Broad-Band X-ray Telescope (BBXRT) has been designed to perform high sensitivity, moderate resolution spectrophotometry of X-ray sources in the 0.3-12 keV band from the Shuttle. It consists of a coaligned pair of high throughput conical X-ray imaging mirrors, with a cryogenically cooled multiple element Si(Li) spectrometer at the focus of each. On axis, BBXRT will have an effective area of 580 sq cm at 2 keV and 250 sq cm at 7 keV, and a spectral resolution of 110 eV at 2 keV and 150 eV at 7 keV. A 10,000-s observation with BBXRT will allow a determination of the continuum spectral shape for sources near the Einstein deep survey limit.

Description: The basic principles for the design of conical optics, and the development of an arc-minute quality conical mirror are described. Computer ray tracing data for over 100 conical mirror designs are analyzed in order to study the intrinsic capabilities of conical mirrors; the intrinsic spatial resolution and approximate filling factor are considered. The procedures for the fabrication of a conical mirror for the Broad-Band X-ray Telescope experiment to be flown on the Shuttle are examined. A f/10 conical mirror with 3.8 m focal length and a filling factor of about 60 percent, consisting of 18 nested reflector pairs has been developed. The difference between the intrinsic and measured half-power radii is investigated. Methods for improving the spatial resolution of conical mirrors are being researched. The advantages and disadvantages of conical mirrors are discussed. It is noted that conical mirrors are applicable for studies in which a broad bandpass, moderate spatial resolution, and a small number of mirrors are required.
