Notes: A multichannel far-infrared interferometer used on the Joint European Torus (JET) is described. The light source is a 195-μm DCN laser. The instrument is of the Mach–Zehnder type, with a heterodyne detection system. The modulation frequency (100 kHz) is produced by diffraction from a rotating grating. There are six vertical and two oblique channels. The latter rely on retroreflection from mirrors mounted on the vessel wall. Their vibration is compensated by a second wavelength interferometer at 118.8 μm. The various subsystems are described, with emphasis on features necessitated by (a) large path lengths, (b) remote handling requirements, (c) fluctuations in atmospheric humidity, and (d) unmanned automatic operation. Typical measurements, along with real-time and off-line data analysis, are presented. The phase-shift measurement is made with an accuracy of (1)/(20) of a fringe, corresponding to a line-integrated electron density of 5×1017 m−2. Comparison with other electron density diagnostics are shown. The introduction of additional optics allows measurements of the Faraday effect and a determination of the poloidal magnetic field distribution. The signal processing and data analysis are described. Errors introduced by the calibration procedure, birefringence of the probing beams, toroidal field pickup, the flux geometry, and the density profile are considered. The Faraday angle is measured with an accuracy of 5% and a time resolution of 1–10 ms. The poloidal magnetic field is deduced with an accuracy of ±15%.

Notes: We have measured the saturation of optical absorption in GaSb at wavelengths close to the band gap, and have determined the nonlinear absorption (α2) and refraction (n2) coefficients. At liquid-helium temperature a sharp free-exciton absorption line is observed which saturates with increasing incident laser intensity; we obtain values ||α2||=70 cm W−1 and ||n2||≈0.2 cm2 kW−1. At room temperature we do not observe a well-defined exciton; saturation of the residual interband absorption occurs at much higher intensity, and it is found to be obscured by strong thermal effects.

Notes: We report the observation of electric field induced exciton energy shifts and photoluminescence quenching in GaInAs/InP multiple quantum wells. We have measured both the photocurrent and photoluminescence spectra from 100 A(ring) wells contained with p+- and n+-InP layers in a conventional p-i-n structure; reverse bias voltages of up to 12 V were applied. The exciton peaks in the photocurrent spectrum are seen to broaden and shift to lower energy; the photoluminescence peak, which is due to n=1 excitonic and free-carrier recombination, also shifts to lower energy and is completely quenched at high voltages. These results are similar to those reported previously for GaAs quantum wells and ascribed to the quantum-confined Stark effect.

Notes: We have measured the diffusion and trapping of photoexcited hot carriers in an InGaAs/InP heterostructure using an optical time-of-fight technique with picosecond time resolution. The ambipolar diffusivity is found to decrease by an order of magnitude between 4 K and room temperature, and the efficiency of trapping of carriers into the well increases rapidly in the same temperature range. A mean trapping time of 4 ps is measured for a 50 A(ring) well.

Notes: Murine splenocytes which contained B cells activated by in vivo exposure to affinity-purified goat anti-mouse IgD (GaMD) antibody were utilized to present major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and non-MHC minor lymphocyte-stimulating (Mlsa) determinants in a primary mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR). As the time in hours after in vivo exposure to GaMD increased, splenocytes from adult mice showed a co-ordinate increase in cell size, expression of public and private MHC class II antigenic determinants and MHC and Mlsa antigen-presenting capacity. This augmented alloantigen-presenting capacity was demonstrable with either irradiated or mitomycin C-treated adult splenocytes. In contrast, GaMD-treated neonatal splenocytes from 10-day-old mice demonstrated no significantly increased class II expression or enhanced MHC stimulatory capacity, but nevertheless triggered augmented responder cell proliferation across an Mlsa barrier. Thus, increased class II expression or presenting capacity may not be required for an augmentation in splenocyte Mls-stimulating ability to occur. In vitro exposure of T cell-depleted splenocytes or highly purified small resting B cells to GaMD or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced a substantially increased ability in those populations to present MHC and Mlsa antigens in a primary MLR. Hence in vivo or in vitro activation of B lymphocytes in a stimulator cell population may yield more effective presentation of MHC and non-MHC determinants.

Notes: Studies were carried out to determine the protein quality of whole dried honey bees (56.8% crude protein, 11.1% chitin) and honey bee protein concentrate (64.2% crude protein, 0% chitin). The levels of most of the indispensable amino acids were higher in honey bee protein concentrate than in whole dried bees. The true protein digestibility was higher (P 〈 0.05) in the concentrate (94.3%) than in whole dried honey bees (71.5%), as were the amino acid availabilities. PER and NPU were 2.47 and 62, respectively, in the concentrate and 1.50 and 42.5, respectively, in whole dried honey bees. The removal of chitin following alkali extraction of whole dried honey bees is primarily responsible for the improvement in protein quality.

Notes: Summary Six normal young and six normal elderly volunteers and six elderly hypertensive patients took part in an acute and chronic dose study of a combination capsule containing atenolol (50 mg), hydrochlorothiazide (25 mg) and amiloride (2.5 mg) designed for the treatment of hypertension. No difference in any of the drug pharmacokinetic parameters could be detected between the hypertensives and the normal elderly subjects. The bio-availability and the 24-h blood concentrations of all three drugs, half-life of atenolol and amiloride and the peak concentration of hydrochlorothiazide was significantly greater in the elderly. The 24-h blood concentrations of atenolol and hydrochlorothiazide did not alter with chronic dosing, but amiloride concentrations were significantly higher at this time in all groups. A significant fall in the blood pressure was observed in the hypertensive group. Heart rate fell more in the normal and hypertensive elderly subjects than in the young. The combination has shown to be an effective and well tolerated antihypertensive in the elderly patient with a 24-h duration of action.

Notes: Abstract The solutions for the imaginary susceptibility of the Raman field transition with arbitrary relaxation rates and field strengths are examined for differeing sets of relaxation rates with emphasis on alkali metal vapors which have spontaneous emission dominated relaxation. The model is further expanded to include Doppler broadening and used to predict the peak gain as a function of detuning for a frequency doubled alexandrite laserpumped cesium vapor gain cell.
