Notes: 4-Acetoxy 4′-carboxy biphenyl has been polymerized from solution, the bulk melt, and in constrained thin films, all below the melting point of the monomer as measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). An isothermal sublimation-recrystallization-melting (and chemical change)-polymerization-crystallization process is proposed. From solution and in the thin films, single crystals consisting of ca. 100 Å thick lamellae are observed, with evidence for monomer addition-reaction on the end (top and bottom) surfaces. The bulk samples are fibrous, the “fibers” consisting of whisker-like single crystals. The polymer is highly heat and radiation (electron beam) resistant, with numerous successive electron diffraction (ED) patterns from the same crystal or sheared sample permitting comparison of the changes in ED patterns with transitions seen by DSC at ca. 350, 530, and 590°C. Phase I (a = 7.8, b = 5.5, c = 10.8 Å), a possible phase II (a = 15.6, b = 3.6 Å c = unknown), and a phase III (a = 9.0, b = 5.2 = √3a, c = 10.8 Å). Phases I and II are seen in samples polymerized at temperatures at and below 310°C; phase III is observed in samples polymerized at and above 350°C and in sheared samples. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Electron diffraction from single crystal lamellae and whiskers of poly(2,6-oxynaphthoate) reveals the presence of at least 3 unit cells. The equatorial reflections in the patterns from the whiskers correspond to the dominant (phase I) hk0 diffraction pattern from the lamellae; phase I is monoclinic with 2 chemical repeats per physical repeat. The intensity distributions in the hk0 patterns of phase I and II resemble those of the same phases in poly(p-oxybenzoate). The hk0 reflections of phase III suggest a common internapthalene unit spacing, but variable lateral (and possibly axial) shifts; apparently related orthorhombic and monoclinic patterns, with variable γ*, are observed. At elevated temperature, above the crystalliquid crystal transition (ca. 330°C), quadrant reflections are retained; the change in the hk0 pattern from any given crystal is gradual, extending over some 40°C. Above the liquid crystal-liquid crystal transition (ca. 460°C) the pattern can be interpreted in terms of nematic or possibly smectic A packing. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Folded chain single crystals 35 Å thick have been grown from the liquid crystal state of an aromatic-aliphatic azomethine ether polymer (AZMEP-n) having a 10-carbon flexible segment (n = 10). Electron diffraction has permitted refinement of the triclinic unit cell. The molecular axes lie at an ca. 65° angle to the lamella normal and fold every third chemical repeat distance. For AZMEP-1 and -8 extended chain lamellae are formed; for AZMEP-7 both folded and extended chain lamellae are found. The observations of folded chain lamallae are in agreement with prior suggestions from our laboratory of chain folding in the liquid crystalline state in thin films. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The morphology of a number of polyamides (PA) - namely, PA-66, PA-6/PA-66 blends, and PA-6/PA-66 copolymers - prepared from HCOOH solution and from the melt has been examined as well as the effect of annealing. In the blends, the PA-6 crystallizes within the PA-66 spherulites. When prepared from HCOOH solution at 25°C, the PA-66-containing samples show a large exothermic peak before the sample melting peak is observed by DSC. This exothermic peak, which cannot be fully explained by previously known observations, PA recrystallization, and/or the morphology changes we describe here, is not seen for PA-6 or for PA-66 prepared from HCOOH solution at 100°C. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The morphology of ca. equimolar random terpolymer liquid crystal polymers of an aliphatic segment of 4-7 carbon atoms, oxybenzoate, and dioxyphenyl crystallized from the nematic state in the form of thin films on glycerine by slow cooling and quenching has been characterized by electron microscopy (TEM) and diffraction (ED). In all cases a folded chain, lamellar structure is found. The ED studies suggest adjacent reentry, and despite a large ΔH, indicate no change in lateral molecular packing at the crystal-“liquid crystal” transition with a transformation to the nematic state at a higher temperature “liquid crystal”-liquid crystal transition. The results are interpreted as suggesting similar folded chain, lamellar morphology in the nematic state. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The post-curing and transition behavior of a highly fluorinated epoxy resin system was characterized. The material was found to have low temperature transitions similar to those found in DGEBA. The cure was discovered to be inhibited by the presence of CO2. The glass transition was broad and near room temperature, resulting in rapid aging characteristics.

Notes: The behavior of a highly fluorinated epoxy resin blended with Epon 828 was studied. The two resins are immiscible, resulting in 10-20-μm spherical domains and a surface layer of fluorinated resin. A B stage for the blend providing for good ply lamination is indicated. The mechanical properties of the blend were commensurate with the Epon phase.
