Notes: Abstract High latitude ion outflows mostly consist of upward streaming O+ and He+ emanating from the ionosphere. At heights above 1000 km, these flows consist of cold and hot components which resonantly scatter solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light, however, the ion populations respond differently to Doppler shifting resulting from the large relative velocities between the ions and the Sun. The possibility of optical detection of the Doppler effect on the scattering rate will be discussed for the O+ (83.4 nm) ions. We have contrasted the EUV solar resonance images of these outflows by simulations of the 30.4 nm He+ and 83.4 nm O+ emissions for both quiet and disturbed geomagnetic conditions. Input data for the 1000 km level has been obtained from the EICS instrument aboard the Dynamics Explorer satellite. Our results show emission rates of 50 and 56 milli-Rayleighs at 30.4 nm for quiet and disturbed conditions and 65 and 75 milli-Rayleighs at 83.4 nm for quiet and disturbed conditions, respectively, obtained for a polar orbiting satellite and viewing radially outward. We also find that an imager at an equatorial distance of 9 RE or more is in a favorable position for detecting ion outflows, particularly when the plasmapause is depressed in latitude. However, an occultation disk is necessary to obscure the bright plasmaspheric emissions.

Notes: Abstract Both Pb(II) and UO2 2+ were abstracted from aqueous solution by both living and dead biomasses of Streptomyces sp. The organisms were particularly effective in taking up UO2 2+ ions. Optimum pH for both metals was pH 5 to 6. For a UO2 2+ concentrations of 1 mmol L−1 and a dead biomass concentration of 1 g L−1, 60% of the UO2 2+ was removed from solution. If cell wall material of the organism was prepared from a killed biomass an equal weight of the material removed 90% of the UO2 2+ from solution. in this case accumulated U in the biomass was 0.9 mmol g−1 of dry biomass. Electron micrographs showed clearly that the Pb abstracted was only in the microorganisms cell surface, but UO2 2+ uptake was also intracellular.

Notes: Abstract The crystallography and the interface structure of a unidirectionally solidified Cu-MgCu2 eutectic alloy have been examined by transmission electron microscopy. The microstructure of the eutectic was found to be lamellar and regularly interrupted by faults. The preference of the particular orientation relationship $$((\bar 1\bar 11)_{Cu} //(11\bar 1)_{MgCu_2 } )$$ could not be explained by relative atomic densities of the planes comprising the interface. Based on the defect contrast observed and extinction distance calculations, it is suggested that the fine array of defects observed at the interface may be characterized as steps with step vectors parallel to $$\left[ {110} \right]_{_{MgCu_2 } } $$ or $$\left[ {01\bar 1} \right]_{_{MgCu_2 } } $$ Dislocations were also observed at the interface but they were rarely regular.

Notes: Abstract The γ-(Fe, Cr)3C pseudo-binary eutectic alloy with K, Ce, Sb additives was unidirectionally solidified in a Brigdman-type unit. The quasi-regular, lamellar eutectic carbide was changed into rods and bent blades by the modifiers under well-controlled conditions. At very slow growth, partial modification was common. At growth rates corresponding to a slightly cellular interface, a fully modified structure could be obtained. The modification behaviour as a function of the modifying element, its concentration and the growth rate is described and discussed.

Notes: Abstract Rapid quenching of hypereutectic Bi-Mn alloys with compositions ranging from Bi-1.5wt% Mn (Bi-5 at% Mn) to Bi-20 wt% Mn (Bi-50 at% Mn) was carried out to achieve an optimum constitution of the ferromagnetic MnBi phase. Microstructural investigations by optical and electron microscopy techniques revealed the presence of very fine MnBi particles in the as-spun samples. The results of the microstructural and thermal analysis studies have indicated that it is possible to achieve control over the size and amount of the ferromagnetic phase by melt spinning. Some initial results of magnetic properties of melt-spun ribbons are also presented.

Notes: Abstract Molecular dynamics has been used with a Lennard-Jones (6–12) potential in order to study the decay behavior of neutral Argon clusters containing between 12 and 14 atoms. The clusters were heated to temperatures well above their melting points and then tracked in time via molecular dynamics until evaporation of one or more atoms was observed. In each simulation, the mode of evaporation, energy released during evaporation, and cluster lifetime were recorded. Results from roughly 2000 simulation histories were combined in order to compute statistically significant values of cluster half-lives and decay energies. It was found that cluster half-life decreases with increasing energy and that for a given value of excess energy (defined asE=(E tot −E gnd)/n), the 13 atom cluster is more stable against decay than clusters containing either 12 or 14 atoms. The dominant decay mechanism for all clusters was determined to be single atom emission.

Notes: The flotation of Streptomyces pilosus was studied in the absence and presence of adsorbed Pb(II) ions on the cell walls and with and without using sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) as collector. Adsorption of SDS onto the organism in the absence and presence of Pb(II) ions was also investigated. It was found that in the absence of adsorbed Pb(II), very little flotation took place with or without the presence of SDS although SDS adsorbed to some extent on the organism. The presence of Pb(II) on the bacterium's cell walls significantly increased flotation even in the absence of the collector. Addition of SDS, however, further increased both flotation rate and recovery.
