    Notes: High-quality TiN films were deposited in an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma process at low substrate temperatures between 100 and 450 °C using tetra-isopropoxide titanium (TIPT) {Ti[OCH(CH3)2]4} as precursor. TIPT was introduced into the downstream region of an ECR nitrogen or ammonia plasma. The electrical properties of the gold colored TiN layers (100–400 μΩ cm) depend on the deposition rate and the substrate temperature. Despite the use of an oxygen containing titanium precursor the oxygen content in the TiN was found to be ≤2 at.%. The measured resistivities and the purity of the TiN films indicate a selective cleavage of the isopropoxide ligand in the ECR downstream plasma. The films were characterized by resistivity measurements and secondary ion mass spectrometry. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A low-temperature process for titanium nitride (TiN) deposition by means of an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition process was applied to poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE). Tetrakis(dimethylamido)titanium introduced into the downstream region of a nitrogen ECR plasma was used as a precursor for TiN deposition at 100 °C. The thin TiN films (thickness 15–30 nm) act as interlayers to activate the electroless deposition of copper followed by an electroplating process. Prior to the deposition of the interlayer, the samples were treated on a biased susceptor with argon ions to enhance the adhesion of the TiN interlayer. This metallization procedure avoids the use of toxic and pollutive etching agents and yields adherent copper layers on PTFE. Films were characterized by four-point probe resistivity measurements, atomic force microscopy, and secondary ion mass spectrometry. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: InAs self-assembled quantum dots in InAlAs matrix grown on InP(001) substrates have been fabricated using Stranski–Krastanov growth mode. A strong in-plane polarized intraband absorption in the 10.6–20 μm wavelength region has been observed and ascribed to a transition from the ground electron state to an excited state confined in the layer plane along the [110] direction. The absorption at normal-incidence reaches 7.8% for ten layers of n-doped quantum dots. The oscillator strength of the intraband transition is comparable to that achieved in quantum wells for a conduction band intersubband transition. The dependence of the intraband absorption on carrier concentration and temperature suggests a quantum-wire type confinement potential. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  The microbial oxidation of ebastine to carebastine was investigated. Among the 15 micro-organisms examined, only the Cunninghamella strains showed the desired biotransformation. Cunninghamella blakesleeana oxidised the substrate within 7 days, via the intermediates alcohol and aldehyde, mainly to carebastine, the corresponding carboxylic acid. Optimisation of the culture conditions increased the yield from initially 10% up to a reproducible 40%. For the synthesis of carebastine a substrate concentration of 200 mg/l, a starting pH of 5.0 and the addition of 1% poly(vinyl alcohol) is favourable. The results achieved in experiments with shaking flasks are transferable to the fermentation scale and yielded 270 mg carebastine in a 3-l fermentation of 600 mg ebastine. The progress of the reaction was detected by TLC and HPLC, the products were identified by mass spectrometry and NMR.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: To assess the factors that contribute to impaired quinine clearance in acute falciparum malaria. Patients: Sixteen adult Thai patients with severe or moderately severe falciparum malaria were studied, and 12 were re-studied during convalescence. Methods: The clearance of quinine, dihydroquinine (an impurity comprising up to 10% of commercial quinine formulations), antipyrine (a measure of hepatic mixed-function oxidase activity), indocyanine green (ICG) (a measure of liver blood flow), and iothalamate (a measure of glomerular filtration rate) were measured simultaneously, and the relationship of these values to the␣biotransformation of quinine to the active metabolite 3-hydroxyquinine was assessed. Results: During acute malaria infection, the systemic clearance of quinine, antipyrine and ICG and the biotransformation of quinine to 3-hydroxyquinine were all reduced significantly when compared with values during convalescence. Iothalamate clearance was not affected significantly and did not correlate with the clearance of any of the other compounds. The clearance of total and free quinine correlated significantly with antipyrine clearance (r s = 0.70, P = 0.005 and r s = 0.67, P = 0.013, respectively), but not with ICG clearance (r s = 0.39 and 0.43 respectively, P 〉 0.15). In a multiple regression model, antipyrine clearance and plasma protein binding accounted for 71% of the variance in total quinine clearance in acute malaria. The pharmacokinetic properties of dihydroquinine were generally similar to those of quinine, although dihydroquinine clearance was less affected by acute malaria. The mean ratio of quinine to 3-hydroxyquinine area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) values in acute malaria was 12.03 compared with 6.92 during convalescence P=0.01. The mean plasma protein binding of 3-hydroxyquinine was 46%, which was significantly lower than that of quinine (90.5%) or dihydroquinine (90.5%). Conclusion: The reduction in quinine clearance in acute malaria results predominantly from a disease-induced dysfunction in hepatic mixed-function oxidase activity (principally CYP 3A) which impairs the conversion of quinine to its major metabolite, 3-hydroxyquinine. The metabolite contributes approximately 5% of the antimalarial activity of the parent compound in malaria, but up to 10% during convalescence.

    Notes: Abstract. Using simple and general arguments we propose an effective Hamiltonian for the description of low-energy pure QCD. The Hamiltonian is a function of spatially constant collective modes. Its eigenstates can be organized into bands classified by the irreducible representations of an O(8) group. The latter also determine parity and charge conjugation of the states. The energy spectrum agrees well with the glueball spectrum as measured on the lattice, and in particular the level ordering with respect to spin is naturally explained.

    Notes: Abstract. Knowledge of the centre-of-mass energy at LEP2 is of primary importance to set the absolute energy scale for the measurement of the W-boson mass. The beam energy above 80 GeV is derived from continuous measurements of the magnetic bending field by 16 NMR probes situated in a number of the LEP dipoles. The relationship between the fields measured by the probes and the beam energy is calibrated against precise measurements of the average beam energy between 41 and 55 GeV made using the resonant depolarisation technique. The linearity of the relationship is tested by comparing the fields measured by the probes with the total bending field measured by a flux loop. This test results in the largest contribution to the systematic uncertainty. Several further corrections are applied to derive the centre-of-mass energies at each interaction point. In addition, the centre-of-mass energy spread is evaluated. The beam energy has been determined with a precision of 25 MeV for the data taken in 1997, corresponding to a relative precision of $2.7\times 10^{-4}$ . This is small in comparison to the present uncertainty on the W mass measurement at LEP. However, the ultimate statistical precision on the W mass with the full LEP2 data sample should be around 25 MeV, and a smaller uncertainty on the beam energy is desirable. Prospects for improvements are outlined.
