Notes: Abstract We present data showing that the intra-oceanic shortening now occurring south of the eastern Nankai Trough that has produced the Zenisu Ridge has also been responsible for the formation of a previous ridge now buried below the continental margin. This ridge, that we refer to as Paleo-Zenisu, is presently adjacent to the backstop and its location coincides with the outer limit of the seismogenic decollement. The subduction of the paleo-Zenisu ridge below the wedge has led to its complete reorganization and has given its identity to the Great Tokai earthquake rupture zone. The formation of paleo-Zenisu and its consequent subduction has induced the tilting of the backstop toward the northwest since ca2 Ma. This model suggests that the backstop and possibly the wedge are dextrally sheared because they are extruded southwestward in relation to the collision of the Izu-Bonin Ridge with Japan. We use the finite motion from Zenisu to paleo-Zenisu to derive both the subduction vectors along the Nankai Trough and the shortening vectors within Zenisu-Izu. The amount of shortening absorbed within Zenisu-Izu increases toward the northeast. The corresponding subduction vectors of the Zenisu platelet below the wedge decrease accordingly to the northeast from 50 to less than 20 mm/year and the Zenisu body rotates clockwise with a pole near 36° North, 139° East. This might explain the apparent longer repetition time of great earthquakes in the Tokai area. On the other hand, the 25-35 mm/year obtained for the rate of shortening along the Zenisu thrust indicates a high seismic potential there.

Notes: Current methods that can be used for the identification of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) include: biochemical tests, pulsed field gel electrophoresis, and fatty acid analysis. These methods can be costly, time-consuming, and technically difficult. We are investigating the microbial ecology of vegetable fermentations and are interested in the rapid identification of LAB isolates. We have adapted a PCR-based ribotyping method for use with LAB. The PCR product (s) produced contains the sequences from the intergenie spacer regions between the rRNA genes. These products can be resolved by standard agarose or acrylamide gel electrophoresis. Using this method, we have identified PCR product electrophoresis banding patterns for the primary species of LAB found in vegetable fermentations, including those from the genera Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Lactococcus, and Pediococcus.

Notes: Abstract A clone containing a 6.4 kb Borrelia burgdorferi chromosomal DNA insert reacted only with sera from patients with Lyme disease and not with any normal human or rabbit sera. Restriction enzyme analysis indicated that this DNA fragment was located on the B. burgdorferi chromosomal map between rpoB and p22A; its direction of transcription was towards p22A. Sequence analysis suggests that LA006 encodes six proteins : three previously described immunodominant lipoproteins of the 39 kDa Bmp protein family, BmpA, BmpB and BmpC; a 51 kDa MgtE magnesium transporter protein; a 16 kDa protein kinase C inhibitor; and a 56 kDa protein with similarity to an uncharacterized Escherichia coli chromosomal open reading frame.

Notes: Autoclaved cabbage juice was inhibitory to growth of Staphylococcus aureus. S-Methyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (SMCSO), autoclaved either together with or separately from nutrient broth, also inhibited the growth of S. aureus, but inhibition was greater when SMCSO was autoclaved separately. Methyl methanethiosulfonate (MMTSO2), a thermal breakdown product of SMCSO, completely inhibited growth of S. aureus at 10 ppm. MMTSO2 was formed in both autoclaved samples of cabbage juice and aqueous solution of SMCSO. Thus, evidence indicates that the bacterial inhibitory activity in autoclaved cabbage juice was due to heatinduced formation of MMTSO2 from SMCSO.

Notes: Abstract A variation of Bell's theorem that deals with the indeterministic case is formulated and proved within the logical framework of Lewis's theory of counterfactuals. The no-faster-than-light-influence condition is expressed in terms of Lewis ‘would’ counterfactual conditionals. Objections to this procedure raised by certain philosophers of science are examined and answered. The theorem shows that the incompatibility between the predictions of quantum theory and the idea of no faster-than-light influence cannot be ascribed to any auxiliary or tacit assumption of either determinism or the related idea that outcomes of unperformed measurements are determinate within nature. In addition, the theorem provides an example of an application of Lewis's theory of counterfactuals in a rigorous scientific context.

Notes: Abstract Recent genetic evidence suggests that the clam shrimp Eulimnadia texana exhibits androdioecy, a rare mating system. In this system, individuals are either hermaphrodites or males, pure females not being found. Through the use of light microscopy, this study provides anatomical evidence that egg-bearing individuals are, indeed, hermaphrodites. All such individuals observed possess ovotestes with testicular tissue restricted to the posterior region of the gonad. Developing sperms in hermaphrodites are similar in appearance to those seen in male-only individuals.
