Notes: HgBa2CuO4+δ (Hg1201) samples with 0.03≤δ≤0.4 have been obtained. The magnetization of the powdered Hg1201 samples was determined using a Quantum Design SQUID magnetometer. It was observed that while the magnetization of Hg1201 increased with δ in the underdoped region, the magnetization decreased with δ in the overdoped region. These results suggest an increase of ns/m* with oxidation in the underdoped region and a decrease in the overdoped region, similar to that reported in underdoped HTSs and overdoped Tl2201 and Tl1201. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High quality c-axis oriented HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8 thin films have been fabricated with the stable Re-doped Ba2Ca2Cu3Ox precursor powder by pulsed laser deposition followed by postannealing without any special handling. As-grown films on (100) SrTiO3 exhibit a zero-resistance transition (Tc,zero) at ∼131 K with a narrow transition width ΔT∼1.5 K after oxygen annealing at 340 °C for 12 h. The critical current densities are observed 1.1×107 A/cm2 at 10 K and 1.2×105 A/cm2 at 120 K in zero field. The x-ray diffraction pattern indicates highly c-axis oriented thin films normal to the substrate plane containing a minor HgBa2CaCu2O6 phase. The scanning electron microscopy analysis shows that the surface morphology of the film is well connected platelike crystals but reveals Ba–Cu–Ox impurities are uniformly scattered across the film surface. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Highly conductive metallic oxide thin films of SrRuO3 with single crystalline quality have been grown on (001) SrTiO3 by using pulsed laser deposition. The films have a [00l] orientation with an in-plane relationship of [110]SrRuO3 // [100]SrTiO3. They have excellent metallic behavior with room temperature resistivity of ∼310 μΩ cm and a residual resistance ratio of about 7 at 4.2 K, the largest reported to date. A clear ferromagnetic transition at ∼147 K was detected by resistivity and magnetic measurements. However, the transition becomes blurred as the density-of-point defects increases in the films following a 400 keV proton irradiation with an accumulative dose up to ∼6.0×1016 ions/cm2. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effects of thermal annealing on the microstructure at the grain boundary of a 36.8° symmetric [100] tilt SrTiO3 bicrystal were studied. Scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used for nondestructive observation of the boundary structures. Annealing the bicrystalline substrates at temperatures as low as 780 °C led to the formation of grooves at their boundaries. This provides direct evidence that the thickness depression of YBa2Cu3O7−δ films at the bicrystal boundaries originates from the underlying grooved substrates. Defects characterized as holes with diameters ranging from ∼30 nm to ∼200 nm were also observed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The transverse Peltier effect is investigated on the top-seeded melt texture superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO). By restricting the heat absorbing or evolving on one of the sample's surfaces, the Peltier heat flow is converted into a temperature difference for measurement. The temperature difference is found proportional to the current applied, which is in accordance with the prediction of transverse Peltier effect. Based on a simplified model, the difference of the Seebeck coefficients between the ab plane and the c axis, |Sab−Sc|, is about 35 μV/K. It is in good agreement with that of large single crystal [I. Terasaki, Y. Sato, S. Tajima, S. Miyamoto, and S. Tanaka, Physica C 235-240, 1413 (1994)]. The transverse Peltier effect is verified. This supports the idea that the off-diagonal thermoelectric effect is responsible for the anomalously high laser-induced transient transverse voltage on the oriented YBCO superconducting thin films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Perovskite Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films have been synthesized on (001) LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. Extensive x-ray diffraction, rocking curve, and pole-figure studies suggest that the films are c-axis oriented and exhibit good in-plane relationship of 〈100〉BSTO//〈100〉LAO. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry studies indicate that the epitaxial films have excellent crystalline quality with an ion beam minimum yield χmin of only 2.6%. The dielectric property measurements by the interdigital technique at 1 MHz show room-temperature values of the relative dielectric constant, cursive-epsilonr, and loss tangent, tan δ, of 1430 and 0.007 with no bias, and 960 and 0.001 with 35 V bias, respectively. The obtained data suggest that the as-grown Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films can be used for development of room-temperature tunable microwave elements. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] For the successful application of high-temperature copper oxide superconductors, the problem of the ease of motion of magnetic vortices (quantized flux lines) within the material must be solved. The motion results in finite electrical resistance which prevents the desired loss-free conduction ...

Notes: Abstract Over the last 12 years, impressive progress has been made in characterizingthe high temperature superconducting phenomenon and in discovering trendsabout its occurrence. As a result, many models have been advanced to accountfor the observations. In this presentation, I would like to discuss a fewissues that may be important to the understanding of high temperaturesuperconductivity but have not yet been given the attention they deserve inthe development of theoretical models.

Notes: Abstract Hg-1223 thick films on flexible Ni substrate coated with Cr(Ag,Pd) have been fabricated by a two-step spray/press process. The effect of possible interfacial diffusion between Hg-1223/Ni has also been examined. By properly adjusting the processing parameters, a self-field Jc ∼ 7×104 A/cm2 at 77 K has been achieved inthese Hg-1223 thick-film tapes, comparable to that of the well-known BSCCO tapes prepared by the more complex powder-in-tube technique.
