Notes: Abstract Organometal compounds of tin, mercury and lead were simultaneously determined in environmental water and sediment samples by CGC-ICPMS. Instead of classical liquid/liquid extractions, solid phase microextraction was used as sampling technique. In this method, the organometallic compounds arein situ derivatised in the aqueous phase and simultaneously extracted onto a polydimethylsiloxane fiber, so that organic solvents are no longer necessary. The sorbed organometals are subsequently released from the fiber in the GC injection liner by thermal desorption. By sampling from the headspace, only the species of interest are sampled and no interfering matrix components are coextracted. With this new method, derivatisation, extraction, preconcentration and injection into the GC takes only 10 min with a minimum of handling steps. Owing to the very low detection limits (0.13–3.7 ng/1 as metal) only small sample amounts (25 ml of water, 0.5 g of sediment) are needed for one analysis. Finally, SPME is an inexpensive sampling technique that can be used with standard split/splitless injection systems.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of the 8557 theoretically possible structures of polychlorinated terphenyls (PCT) over the different degrees of chlorination and basic terphenyl backbones has been calculated and is presented in detail. As congeners missing chlorine atoms in an ortho position are suspected to be as noxious to organisms as dioxins, the number of these congeners is specified as well. The gas chromatographic retention behavior of 14 PCT single standards is studied on four stationary liquid phases for capillary columns (HP-Ultra 1, HP-5MS, RSL-300 and Polycarbonate) relative to 2,2′,3,4,4′,5,5′-heptachlorobiphenyl and shows no consequent separation of PCT in terms of the degree of chlorination. Individual congeners have been assessed for their suitability as internal standards in PCT analysis.

Notes: Abstract We identified and quantified the major inorganic ions present in a haemolymph of four species of fairy shrimp, to determine its ionic strength, using capillary electrophoresis, non-destructive micro-technique for the analysis of small amounts of body fluids. This is the first speciation and quantitative analysis of inorganic ions in the haemolymph of fairy shrimps.

Notes: Supercritical fluid chromatography was applied to evaluate the direct chiral discriminative properties of Chiralcel OJ, a tris(4-methylbenzoate) cellulose column towards frequently administered drugs. Two groups of acidic drugs, profen and barbiturate derivatives, and a few basic drugs of the benzodiazepine type were analysed. The effect on enantioselectivity of carbon dioxide when using methanol are acetonitrile as primary modifier was studied. Acetonitrile proved to be a good alternative for methanol, especially for the profen compounds that were not well resolved using methanol. The results were compared to normal phase chromatographic applications on the same column. SFC was not necessarily superior to high-performance liquid chromatography. Notes: ---Reversed-flow MEKC, i.e. MEKC at low pHs to suppress the electroosmotic flow, was evaluated for the separation of some homologous series. At low pHs compared to MEKC, the elution order reverses and normal phase type migration is obtained. Moreover, the elution window is nearly infinite. Efficiencies are very high and reproducibilities in absolute migration times are acceptable (%RSD 〈 5). The influence of a series of alcohol modifiers was investigated.

Notes: ---The use of sorptive extraction/thermal desorption (SE/TD) for the enrichment of amines from aqueous samples was investigated. The amines were derivatized in situ in the water sample by pentafluorobenzoyl chloride and subsequently enriched onto the SE cartridge. Two SE/TD cartridges were used, a commercially available polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) packed cartridge and a similar cartridge prepared with newly synthesized poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA). Blank profiles of PBA were not as good as those obtained from the PDMS phase. A complex chromatogram was obtained using mass spectrometric detection. Fortunately, the use of a nitrogen-phosphorus detector (NPD) resulted in clean blanks. The PBA phase showed superior performance for the enrichment of the polar amine derivatives from water samples compared to the PDMS material. Using a CGC-NPD set-up and only 1 mL samples, detection limits are in the sub-ppb range.

Notes: ---Data on the use of two chiral selectors, namely 18-crown-6 tetracarboxylic acid and a negatively charged cyclodextrin derivative (sulfated-β-cyclodextrin or carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin), in the same background electrolyte are presented. The use of such dual systems has a considerable influence on the resolution, as illustrated for the separation of tryptophan derivatives. Reduction of the consumption of chiral selector without significant loss in resolution was obtained by only partly filling the capillary and applying a run buffer without selector. This is illustrated for the chiral separation of tryptophan hydroxamate and the diastereomeric and enantiomeric separation of the dipeptide α/b-AspPhe-OMe.
