Notes: The responsivity and transmission performance of 60-period p-i-n multiple-quantum-well (MQW) optical modulators having single or double steps in the quantum well (QW) has been experimentally compared to a square-QW control sample. It has been confirmed that significantly increased shift of the exciton with applied electric field [the quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE)] is obtained in the stepped QWs as compared to a conventional square QW. However, no meaningful increase in optical modulation performance is found, due to broadening of the exciton transition in the stepped QWs. All MQWs contained nominal 45 A(ring) Al0.3Ga0.7As barriers. Single-step QWs consisted of a 15 A(ring) GaAs region with an 85 A(ring) Al0.1Ga0.9As step. Double-step QWs consisted of a central Al0.15Ga0.85As plateau, with 20 A(ring) GaAs regions on either side. The square QW consisted of 90 A(ring) of GaAs. Excellent agreement between measured QCSE and tunneling resonance calculations was found. Our results indicate that stepped MQW devices are intrinsically more susceptible to growth induced degradation than square MQW modulators. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We demonstrate noncontact measurements of the Hall mobility of doped semiconductor wafers with roughly 250 μm spatial resolution, using polarization rotation of focused beams of terahertz (THz) radiation in the presence of a static magnetic field. Quantitative and independent images of both carrier density and mobility of a doped semiconductor wafer have been obtained. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report an in situ electron diffraction measurement which allows In0.53Ga0.47As to be lattice matched to InP during growth. This method uses analysis of the dynamics of intensity oscillations during electron diffraction to determine when lattice matched growth occurs. With this method we demonstrate closely lattice matched ternary alloys; InGaAs on InP, GaInP on GaAs, and quarternary alloys of InAlGaAs on InP. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the observation of highly nondegenerate four-wave mixing from a semiconductor microcavity. The phase mismatch originating from the unique relationship between a beam incidence angle and its cavity resonance frequency was minimized by using a new method where both of pump and probe beams are obliquely incident. External efficiency of 1.6% was measured at 10 K for 1.5 THz frequency conversion of probe pulses by using 1 ps pump pulses of 55 pJ incident pulse energy. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the observation of ultrafast intensity oscillations in the time resolved optical emission from a semiconductor microcavity resonantly pumped with intense femtosecond pulses. The observed oscillations are pronounced, persist for several picoseconds, and have frequencies varying from 1.4 to 2.7 THz, depending upon the incidence angle of the pump beam. The angular dependence and spectra show that the oscillations result from interference between the pump and surface-normal modes of the microcavity. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The first measurements of subpicosecond dynamics of carrier capture and decay in Be δ-doped GaAs structures with p-doping density ranging from 6×1012 to 2×1014 cm−2 and spatial distribution on monolayer scale show that photoexcited carriers are captured in the δ-doped layer in 〈1 ps. Luminescence decay rates show a strong dependence on energy of the hole in the two-dimensional Fermi gas. We attribute this to a change in the spatial electron-hole overlap resulting from band-mixing effects. We show that Be density fluctuations lead to strong carrier localization. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Reduced-finesse asymmetric Fabry–Pérot modulators are presented utilizing partial antireflection coatings (PAR-ASFP). Nonuniformity in semiconductor layer thicknesses may be corrected for by adjusting the thickness of the partial antireflection layer. Reduced thickness of the semiconductor layers is corrected for by reducing the thickness of the PAR layer, leading to natural extensions to manufacturing. By correcting the PAR, we obtain greater than 6.7:1 contrast over an entire 2 in. wafer at a single wavelength and drive voltage of 9 V. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This study, using a sample of adult Singaporeans, established that 76.8 per cent of its respondents engaged in multiple banking. The Post Office Savings Bank was main bank to 61.3 per cent of the respondents, while the local full licence banks were main bank to 35.1 per cent of the respondents. These same banks held 27.6 per cent and 66.1 per cent respectively of subsidiary bank relationships. Multiple bank customers were typified as being people who were tertiary educated, were Chinese and were paid an income of $2,000 p.m. and above. No significant differences were found upon comparing single and multiple banking customers based on five psychographic characteristics.

Notes: Establishes that, in Singapore, which has a minority of Muslims in its population, both Muslims and non-Muslims are generally unaware of the culture of Islamic banking. Also the two separate groups have different attitudes towards the Islamic banking movement, with the degree of difference depending on the nature of the respective matter put to them. For example, when asked what they would do if an Islamic bank did not make sufficient profits to make a distribution in any one year, 62.1 per cent of Muslims said they would keep their deposits within the Islamic banking movement, while 66.5 per cent of non-Muslims said they would withdraw their deposits. In relation to bank selection criteria, there was general accord as between Muslims and non-Muslims on the rating of the various criteria. Five significant differences were noted, the most relating to "being paid higher interest on savings". The desire to be paid higher interest was far stronger with non-Muslims.

Notes: An organization's death exhibits many of the same feelings and reactions that humans experience with the loss of a loved one. People are forced to disconnect from established relationships and to reconnect with others. This disconnecting and reconnecting involves stages of anticipation or uncertainty, confirmation or recognition of the need for change, action, and adjustment. Describes an observational study of an organization which exhibits the feelings and reactions during different stages of an organization's death. Three propositions explain how people cope during these stages: (i) Those who are able to take positive action have a more pronounced sense of their own ability to control their own destinies (internal locus of control) and a realistic feeling of invulnerability. (ii) The beliefs and illusions about an organization's pending termination may be created and nourished by very little information, rumours and preconceived beliefs. (iii) Some people, who were more receptive to feedback, have some very realistic beliefs about their future and were very capable of adjusting their "paradigms" of how to respond to their future. The painful feelings of disconnecting might be assisted by feedback and support, while reconnecting to new organizations might depend on one's attitudes and beliefs.
