Notes: Abstract The experimental results on the photochromic and mechanical properties of coatings containing 1,3-dihydro-1,3,3-trimethylspiro[2H-indole-2,3′-(3H)-naphth(2,1-b)(1,4) oxazine] (SO) derived from 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), bisphenol A (BPA) and 1-methylimidazole (MI) by sol-gel processing are presented. It is shown that heat treatment temperature is a conflicting factor to the photochromic intensity (Δ A 0), photostability and abrasion resistance of the photochromic coatings. With increasing densification temperature the matrix rigidity increases leading to a decrease of Δ A 0 and at the same time an enhancement of both abrasion resistance and photostability, the optimum heat treatment temperature is 110°C under our experimental conditions. By the use of certain additives, e.g., fluorosilanes (FAS), not only Δ A 0 but also the photostability and the abrasion resistance of the photochromic coatings have been further improved.

Notes: Abstract Organic-inorganic hybrid materials synthesized via sol-gel processing are excellent solid matrices for photochromic dyes like spirooxazine, and the photochromic performance can be further enhanced by introducing suitable additives. This work describes the effects of additives on the photochromic intensity (Δ A 0), decolouration rate (k) and photostability of spirooxazine in sol-gel derived organic-inorganic hybrid matrices. They include fluoro-alkylsilane (FAS), bisphenol A (BPA) and methyl-imidazole (MI). FAS enhances both Δ A 0 and photostability, but has little effect on k. The higher the content of BPA, the higher the Δ A 0 and the higher the photostability, but the lower the k. The effect of MI on Δ A 0 and k is not so considerable as that of BPA and is a little complicated, while significant improvement in photostability is achieved by the addition of MI at an optimum concentration with the presence of BPA at a higher content.

Notes: Cryptoendolithic microorganisms from stratified communities in Antarctic sandstone were studied for physiological diversity and possible interactions. Cultures of 25 bacteria, five fungi, and two green algae from one boulder grew with a wide variety of organic carbon or nitrogen sources, they exhibited varied exoenzymatic activities and were psychrophilic or psychrotrophic. Many isolates excreted vitamins into the medium and were stimulated by other vitamins. Organic acid excretion and siderophore formation were common, but antibiotic activity was rare. Plasmids were found in 24% of the bacteria, and many of these strains showed resistance to antibiotics and heavy metals. A small plasmid (2.9 kb) from strain AA-341 was electrotransferred into sensitive isolates, thereby rendering these resistant to amplicillin and Cr3+ Bacterial cultures in spent algal medium and coculture with algae demonstrated beneficial (rarely inhibitory) interactions. A search for free organic compounds in zones of the sandstone community revealed sugars, sugar alcohols, organic acids and amino acids-in many cases the same compounds that were excreted into the laboratory medium. Data presented here indicate low taxonomic but high physiological diversity among these heterotrophic cryptoendoliths. This physiological diversity, as well as the spatial separation in layers with distinct activities, allows coexistence within the community and contributes to the stability of this ecosystem.

Notes: Abstract The isotope shift in electronic atoms is calculated in second order perturbation theory. We consider multipole ordersλ=0, 1 and 2 forZ=20–82 nuclei. To a good approximation it is directly proportional to the electron density at the nucleus. We study whether the polarization effect modifies the extraction ofδ〈r 2〉 values from isotope shifts measurements and find it to be small but not always negligible. Relative to the volume effect, the polarizability is of the same order of magnitude for electronic as well as muonic atoms.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the corrosion and corrosion protection of seawater cooled condensor tubes of copper-base alloys - Experiments with rotating samplesExperiments have been done on rotating disc and cylinder electrodes of CuZn20Al2, CuNi10Fe and CuNi30Fe in 3 w/o sodium chloride solution and in artificial sea water at 25 and 40 ° C.Erosion corrosion of sea water cooled tube condensors should be simulated and studied. The corrosion mechanism of copper base alloys in clean and polluted sea water was intensely studied with particular consideration to the influence of ammonia, sulfides and chlorine. The effectiveness of iron sulfate dosing was tested. With the rotating samples under test no erosion corrosion could be detected on free corroding specimens.
