Notes: We have systematically investigated resistance of a bismuth cuprate Bi1.5Pb0.5Ca2Sr2Cu3Ox as a function of different annealing treatments. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies were performed on concomitant specimens for correlations between structure and superconducting properties. A sharp 110 K superconducting transition was observed in the sample which was isostructural with the n=2 member of the (Bi,Pb)2(Ca,Sr)n+1CunO2n+4+δ family. The zero resistance transition temperature Tc0 was found to be sensitive to annealing at 673 K with a best result of 100 K for 30 min annealing. It is proposed that Tc0 and transition width in bismuth cuprates are sensitive to oxygen stoichiometry.

Notes: Constrained anisotropic dipole oscillator strength techniques are used to obtain reliable values for a wide range of anisotropic and isotropic dipole properties of O2, including the dipole–dipole dispersion energy coefficients for the interaction of O2 with O2, H2, N2, CO, He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe. Some of the anisotropic constraints required for our calculations are obtained via dipole sum rules from ab initio, multireference configuration interaction (CI) wave functions for the ground state of O2. The individual dipole properties of O2 considered include the dipole oscillator strength sums Sk, k=2,1,0(−1/2)−2,−3,−4,..., the logarithmic dipole sums Lk and mean excitation energies Ik, k=2(−1)−2, and, as a function of wavelength, the dynamic polarizability and its anisotropy, the total depolarization ratio, the Rayleigh scattering cross section, and the Verdet constant. Our constrained dipole oscillator strength results are often the only reliable, and sometimes the only available, ones for many of the properties and dispersion energies considered. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Superconducting properties and microstructures of the YBa2Cu3AgxO7−δ composites have been studied as a function of silver content, 0〈x〈6, using a variety of techniques. The superconducting transition temperature Tc of these composites was found to be the same, ∼90 K, for the above range of composites. For values of x〉3, small quantities of 211 phase were detected along the grain boundaries. Alloy formation between Ag and Cu is proposed to take place which makes the residual composition poor in copper, resulting in the formation of nonsuperconducting 211 phase. The silver is observed in the form of precipitates at very low concentrations of silver, indicating that silver does not substitute for copper in YBa2Cu3O7. Lattice parameters of the composites were found to be invariant throughout the above composition range. The addition of Ag2O in the starting composition seems to stabilize the stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7 by way of decomposition to Ag and O. As a result, the incorporation of oxygen and recovery of superconducting properties is enhanced in the silver composites.

Notes: Dipole oscillator strength distributions (DOSDs) have been constructed for ground SF6 including the IR, UV, and higher energy parts of the absorption spectrum. An adopted DOSD is used to evaluate the dipole oscillator strength sums Sk, k=2,1, 1/2 (− 1/2 )−3,−4,−6,..., mean excitation energies Ik, k=2(−1)−2, dipole–dipole dispersion energies for the interaction of SF6 with itself and with Li, N, O, H2, N2, O2, NO, H2O, NH3, CO2, CO, H, He, Ne Ar, Kr, and Xe, and the triple–dipole dispersion energy for (SF6)3. Pseudo-DOSDs have been constructed for SF6 which facilitate the evaluation of the dispersion energies involving SF6. In most cases uncertainties in our results for the dipole properties and dispersion energy coefficients are (approximately-less-than)1–3%.

Notes: Over the last ten years scores of methodologies have emerged in management science/operations research/statistics that employ techniques such as mathematical programming, simulation, artificial intelligence, and clustering to convert a flexible manufacturing system into a cellular one. Based on a real-life case that involved over 1,000 components and 3,000 operations, related to a world-class furniture manufacturing company, finds that the somewhat outdated King's algorithm, after partial linearization, works as well as the other sophisticated techniques in terms of speed and problem size. Drives home the point that a shift to cellular configuration from functional layout results in across the board savings in material movement, setup times, hilo moves, WIP, work area and in manufacturing leadtime. The company under study benefited to the tune of $164,000 per year from switch to single cell. The projected savings are expected to exceed $700,000 per year when the reconfiguration is completed.

Notes: The operations strategy literature has identified four primary dimensions on which a firm competes with another. These are: price, quality, flexibility, and delivery dependability. Of these, quality is perhaps the most critical dimension in terms of the impact on the degree of competitiveness imparted to a firm by a competitiveness dimension. In this paper, we propose a quantitative measure - quality competitiveness index (QCI) - to determine the degree to which a firm's quality practices and policies are instrumental in improving its competitiveness. The QCI can be effectively employed for benchmarking among competing firms. More importantly, however, the process leading to the determination of QCI is itself an educative one - the weaknesses and strengths of a company with respect to its quality practices and policies come right to the fore and the company can usefully employ this information to improve competitiveness for quality.

Notes: Examines the issue of implementing quality management (QM) programmes in the hospitality industry by grouping the prescriptive literature into four research streams. Based on the literature, suggests a proactive approach to implementing QM in the hospitality industry. Finally, provides issues related to QM in the hospitality sector, which need to be addressed in the future.

Notes: Lending to small businesses has not been perceived to be profitable for banks. This paper demonstrates, by means of a case study, how a Midwest bank in the USA took a proactive approach to turn things around. The proposed reengineering process should produce savings of at least 50 percent in direct underwriting cost. The proposed approach can be used by other banks to obtain similar benefits.
