    Notes: The energetics of Pb film grown at 300 K on two well-defined oxides [a MgO(100) thin film and a p(2×1)-oxide on Mo(100)] have been measured using single-crystal adsorption microcalorimetry. The evolution of the film morphology was followed using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). An initial heat of adsorption of 103 kJ/mol is observed for the Pb/MgO(100) system. Auger results indicate that this is due to the formation of an ∼20 atom Pb island in the first pulse of Pb gas incident on the MgO(100) surface. This allows the extraction of a Pb–MgO(100) bond energy of ∼32±2 kJ/mol in the small two-dimensional particles formed in the first pulse. As more Pb is deposited onto the MgO(100) surface, the Pb forms three-dimensional islands. The integral of the heats of adsorption up to high coverage indicates an adhesion energy of 76.5±∼20 μJ/cm2 for large 3D Pb particles to the MgO(100) substrate. This indicates a Pb–MgO(100) bond energy of 49±13 kJ/mol at the 3D interface. Similar analyses of the Pb/p(2×1)-oxide on Mo(100) surface give an initial heat of adsorption of 146.2 kJ/mol and an adhesion energy of 82.5±20 μJ/cm2 for thick Pb films. This indicates a bond energy of 52±12 kJ/mol for a Pb atom to this surface at the interface of a thick Pb film. The metal's sticking probabilities as a function of coverage and the coverage-dependent changes in optical reflectivity were measured. For the Pb/MgO(100) system, an initial sticking probability of 0.70 at 300 K was observed, whereas for the Pb/p(2×1)-oxide on Mo(100) surface unit sticking probability was observed. The relationship between these quantities and the adsorption energetics is discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Atmospheric [CO2] affects photosynthesis and therefore should affect the supply of carbon to roots. To evaluate interactions between carbon supply and nutrient acquisition, the [CO2] effects on root growth, proteoid root formation and phosphorus (P) uptake capacity were studied in white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) grown hydroponically at 200, 410 and 750 µmol mol−1 CO2, under sufficient (0·25 mm P) and deficient (0·69 µm P) phosphorus. Plant size increased with increasing [CO2] only at high P. Both P deficiency and increasing [CO2] increased the production of proteoid clusters; the increase in response to increased [CO2] was proportionally greater from low to ambient [CO2] than from ambient to high. The activity of phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylase in the proteoid root, the exudation of organic acids from the roots, and the specific uptake of P increased with P deficiency, but were unaffected by [CO2]. Increasing [CO2] from Pleistocene levels to those predicted for the next century increased plant size and allocation to proteoid roots, but did not change the specific P uptake capacity per unit root mass. Hence, rising [CO2] should promote nutrient uptake by allowing lupins to mine greater volumes of soil.

    Notes: Urethral epithelial cells are invaded by Neisseria gonorrhoeae during gonococcal infection in men. To understand further the mechanisms of gonococcal entry into host cells, we used the primary human urethral epithelial cells (PHUECs) tissue culture system recently developed by our laboratory. These studies showed that human asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGP-R) and the terminal lactosamine of lacto-N-neotetraose-expressing gonococcal lipooligosaccharide (LOS) play an important role in invasion of PHUECs. Microscopy studies showed that ASGP-R traffics to the cell surface after gonococcal challenge. Co-localization of ASGP-R with gonococci was observed. As ASGP-R-mediated endocytosis is clathrin dependent, clathrin localization in PHUECs was examined after infection. Infected PHUECs showed increased clathrin recruitment and co-localization of clathrin and gonococci. Preincubating PHUECs in 0.3 M sucrose or monodansylcadaverine (MDC), which both inhibit clathrin-coated pit formation, resulted in decreased invasion. N. gonorrhoeae strain 1291 produces a single LOS glycoform that terminates with Gal(β1–4)GlcNac(β1–3)Gal(β1–4)Glc (lacto-N-neotetraose). Invasion assays showed that strain 1291 invades significantly more than four isogenic mutants expressing truncated LOS. Sialylation of strain 1291 LOS inhibited invasion significantly. Preincubation of PHUECs in asialofetuin (ASF), an ASGP-R ligand, significantly reduced invasion. A dose–response reduction in invasion was observed in PHUECs preincubated with increasing concentrations of NaOH-deacylated 1291 LOS. These studies indicated that an interaction between lacto-N-neotetraose-terminal LOS and ASGP-R allows gonococcal entry into PHUECs.

    Notes: In the present study, we show that Neisseria gonorrhoeae lipooligosaccharide (LOS) can bind to the asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGP-R) on human sperm. This work demonstrates the presence of ASGP-R on human sperm. Binding of purified ASGP-R ligand decreased in the presence of gonococci. Binding of purified iodinated gonococcal LOS identified a protein of molecular weight corresponding to that of human ASGP-R. The presence of excess unlabelled LOS blocked binding of iodinated gonococcal LOS. Binding of wild-type gonococcal LOS to sperm was higher than that of mutant LOS lacking the galactose ligand for ASGP-R. These data suggest that the ASGP-R on human sperm cells recognizes and binds wild-type gonococcal LOS. This interaction may contribute to the transmission of gonorrhea from infected males to their sexual partners.

    Notes: Abstract A population of the bivalve mollusk Tridacna maxima (Röding) from Hron Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, was studied by gel electrophoresis, and proved to be highly variable genetically, with an average heterozygosity of about 22%. This compares closely with a population of T. maxima from Enewetak (Eniwetok) Atoll, with an average heterozygosity of about 20%, very high for marine organisms. Enewetak Atoll was the site of a series of nuclear tests. The Heron Island study verifies that the high variability is natural, and supports the hypothesis that species from trophically stable environments tend to be highly variable genetically.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports a first estimate of the Holocene lake sediment carbon pool in Alberta, Canada. The organic matter content of lake sediment does not appear to depend strongly on lake size or other limnological parameters, allowing a simple first estimate in which we assume all Alberta lake sediment to have the same organic matter content. Alberta lake sediments sequester about 15 g C m-2 yr-1, for a provincial total of 0.23 Tg C yr-1, or 2.3 Pg C over the Holocene. Alberta lakes may represent as much as 1/1700 of total global, annual permanent carbon sequestration.

    Notes: S is said to be efficient if it can be defined by a presentation (A | R) with |R| -|A|=rank(H 2(S)). In this paper we demonstrate certain infinite classes of both efficient and inefficient semigroups. Thus, finite abelian groups, dihedral groups D 2 n with n even, and finite rectangular bands are efficient semigroups. By way of contrast we show that finite zero semigroups and free semilattices are never efficient. These results are compared with some well-known results on the efficiency of groups.
