Notes: : Folate contents of a total of 210 dairy products, including milk, yogurt, ice cream, sherbet, frozen yogurt, pudding, sour cream and cheese, were measured by Lactobacillus casei microbiological assay after the extraction using trienzyme treatment. These values are compared with those using traditional folate conjugase treatment alone and those in previously published food tables. Folate contents by the method using trienzyme treatment were uniformly higher than those using the traditional method and the published contents. To our knowledge, the values published here are the largest collection of folate content of dairy products and can be used to accurately assess dietary folate intake in the general population.

Notes: The aim of this work was to validate the Wilson and Laing theoretical mathematical model for estimating the intrinsic "dry" thermal resistance of upper-bedding, and compare the two-dimensional models commonly used to estimate the "dry" thermal resistance of bedding in use, with the actual intrinsic "dry" thermal resistance measured using an infant thermal manikin. The Wilson and Laing model was the only model used adequately to estimate the intrinsic "dry" thermal used resistance of materials arranged over the infant thermal manikin. Estimation of intrinsic "dry" thermal resistance of bedding during use is not adequate using two-dimensional models. Further investigation into the relationship between thermal resistance, conditions of use, and SIDS using the Wilson and Laing model is recommended.

Notes: An electron crystallographic image-processing technique based on the combination of high-resolution electron microscopy and electron diffraction has been developed to investigate the commensurate structural modulation in the high-Tc superconductor (Pb0.5Sr0.3Cu0.2)Sr2(Ca0.6Sr0.4)Cu2Oy. After symmetry averaging, a structure image was obtained by image deconvolution at the resolution limited by that of the electron microscope. Then phase extension was employed to enhance the image resolution up to about 1.25 Å by means of the electron diffraction data corrected with an empirical method. In the final projected potential map, the occupational and/or positional modulation is clearly observed for all atoms, including oxygen. The key points of determining superstructures by the technique are studied and discussed.

Notes: Summary We have carried out randomized 12-week multicentre study to compare the effects of prazosin and propranolol on blood pressure and serum lipids in 70 patients with essential hypertension after a 4 week minimum period of treatment with thiazide diuretics. After 12 weeks treatment with prazosin (n=40, 1.5–12.0 mg per day) or propranolol (n=30, 30–120 mg per day) with diuretics there was a significant blood pressure reduction from 165.1/97.9 mmHg to 151.2/90.6 mmHg and from 167/96.5 mmHg to 153/91.9 mmHg, respectively. In the 12th week a significant decrease was noted in triglyceride and in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL + VLDL-C), but no significant effects were seen in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in patients receiving prazosin. On the other hand, a significant decrease in lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) was seen in patients receiving propranolol. Twenty-six of 40 patients receiving prazosin were given an additional 12 weeks of treatment. Twenty-two of 30 patients initially treated with propranolol were switched from propranolol to prazosin after 13 weeks and given prazosin up to the 24th week. At 24 weeks, the blood pressure was 149/93.0 mmHg in the prazosin group and 155/89.2 mmHg in the group which switched from propranolol to prazosin. Triglyceride remained reduced in the prazosin group at the 24th week. In the group which switched from propranolol to prazosin, triglyceride decreased significantly over the next 12 weeks.

Keywords: ABC transporter white gene Bombyx mori Egg- and eye-colour mutants

Notes: Abstract. In the silkworm, Bombyx mori, many eye- and egg-colour mutations affecting the synthesis and accumulation of ommochrome pigments have been described. In order to understand the pigment precursor transporters involved, ABC transporter genes homologous to the Drosophila white gene were isolated from the silkworm. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) using embryonic mRNA amplified three cDNA fragments, named Bmwh1, Bmwh2 and Bmwh3 that showed homology to the white gene. Since Bmwh3 shows the highest degree of sequence identity and a similar expression pattern to the Drosophila homologue, we characterised this gene further. A 2667-bp Bmwh3 cDNA isolated from an embryonic library has one ORF encoding a polypeptide of 687 amino acids. The predicted protein has one ATP-binding domain, six transmembrane-spanning segments and high similarity to the Drosophila WHITE protein. Southern analysis indicates that Bmwh3 is a single-copy gene. Polyadenylated Bmwh3 transcripts about 2.7 kb long were detected in eggs, Malpighian tubules and pupal heads, but not in testes, posterior silk glands or fat body cells. The level of Bmwh3 mRNA was reduced in w3 and w3 ol mutants but normal in other egg- and eye-colour mutants, suggesting that Bmwh3 correspond to the w3 locus. Genetic analysis was used to map the cloned gene to chromosome 10.

Notes: Abstract Binding isotherms of two types of ionic surfactants, CmH2m +1SO4Na (m = 8,10,12) and CnH2n + 1N+(CH3)3C1 (n=10, 12), to human hair in aqueous solutions were examined to clarify effects of hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction of ionic surfactants with hair. The binding isotherms of anionic surfactants showed cooperativity with discontinuously increasing shapes, while the binding isotherms of cationic surfactants showed a Langmuir-type, regardless of the difference of a hair condition. The calculated free energy change (— ΔG@#@) for binding, obtained from Klotz' plots, suggests that the binding processes are governed mainly by a hydrophobic interaction, and bound surfactants probably expose their alkyl chains to the aqueous phase, since no-ΔG was observed with the increase of m or n and values of enthalpy change(ΔH) were positive or zero.

Notes: When thin films of liquid are produced by roll coaters it is commonly observed that the liquid film is not uniform but shows either regular or irregular patterns resulting from hydrodynamic origins. The appearance of the liquid film has been considered to be governed by the flow geometry and dynamics in a nip region between two adjacent solid planes.Experimental work was done to observe the flow geometries in the nip region and patterns of liquid film by using a roll-stationary, transparent flat plate system. Two fundamental mechanisms for rib disappearance in practical high-speed coatings were recognized. It was also found that the constant rib interval for infinite capillary number depends not only upon the minimum gap size but also upon the physical properties of the liquid. Experimental data are presented in dimensionless form for meniscus position, rib interval, constant rib interval, and for the critical or transient conditions of rib formation, rib disappearance, unstead ribbing, and centrifugal splash.Comparison of present results for the speed ratio U2/U1 = 0 with previous results for U2/U1 = 1 shows the significance of the speed ratio to the meniscus position and the rib interval.
