Abstract The infrared spectroscopic measurements of synthetic and natural carbonate samples show that significant frequency shifts in the v2 and v4 vibrational bands of the carbonate ion group occur in the calcite-rhodochrosite and calcite-magnesite mineral series as a function of the chemical composition. These shifts are due to cationic substitution, reflecting the different ionic raddii and masses of the end-members. A tentative model for the variations of v2 and v4 in the ternary system CaCO3−MnCO3−MgCO3 is presented.
