    Notes: Metal plasma formed by a vacuum arc plasma source can be passed through a toroidal-section magnetic duct for the filtering of macroparticles from the plasma stream. In order to maximize the plasma transport efficiency of the filter the duct wall should be biased, typically to a positive voltage of about 10–20 V. In some cases it is not convenient to bias the duct, for example if the duct wall is part of the grounded vacuum system. However, a positively biased electrode inserted into the duct along its outer major circumference can serve a similar purpose. In this article, we describe our results confirming and quantifying this effect. We also show the parametric dependence of the duct transport on the experimental variables. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High energy implantation of metal ions can be carried out using conventional ion implantation with a mass-selected ion beam in scanned-spot mode by employing a broad-beam approach such as with a vacuum arc ion source, or by utilizing plasma immersion ion implantation with a metal plasma. For many high dose applications, the use of plasma immersion techniques offers a high-rate process, but the formation of a surface film along with the subsurface implanted layer is sometimes a severe or even fatal detriment. We describe here an operating mode of the metal plasma immersion approach by which pure implantation can be obtained. We have demonstrated the technique by carrying out Ti and Ta implantations at energies of about 80 and 120 keV for Ti and Ta, respectively, and doses on the order of 1×1017 ions/cm2. Our experiments show that virtually pure implantation without simultaneous surface deposition can be accomplished. Using proper synchronization of the metal arc and sample voltage pulse, the applied dose that deposits as a film versus the part that is energetically implanted (the deposition-to-implantation ratio) can be precisely controlled.© 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) is an effective technique for the surface modification of industrial components possessing an irregular shape. We have recently used PIII to treat a real industrial ball bearing to enhance the surface properties of the race surface on which the balls roll. The implantation dose uniformity along the groove is assessed using theoretical simulation and experiments. The two sets of results agree very well, showing larger doses near the center. However, the highest dose is not observed at the bottom or center of the groove, but rather offset toward the side close to the sample platen when the bearing is placed horizontally. The minimum dose is observed near the edge or corner of the groove and our model indicates that it is due to the more glancing ion incidence as a result of the evolution of the ion sheath near the corner. The dose nonuniformity along the groove surface is about 40% based on our experimental data. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this paper, Lifted Wavelet Transform (LWT) and BP neural network are used forautomatic flaw classification of pipeline girth welds. LWT is proposed to extract flaw feature fromultrasonic echo signals, ideally matched local characteristics of original signal and increasing thecomputational speed and flaw classification efficiency. After extracting features of all flaw echoes, afeature library is constructed. A modified BP neural network is followed as a classifier, trained by thelibrary. When feature of any flaw echo is extracted and sent to BP network, flaw type is the output,realizing automatic flaw classification. Experiment results prove the proposed method, LWT with BPneural network, is more fit for automatic flaw classification than traditional methods

    Notes: Experiments involving metal dusting in carbonaceous atmosphere and oxidation in air havebeen carried out at 593 and 704oC using T22, T91 and 800 alloy steels. The effect of Cr on thesetwo processes can be understood because of their compositions. In general, the resistance to bothmetal dusting up to 1000 hours and oxidation up to 456 hours has been found to improve withincrease in Cr content from 2.36 to 21.6%. However, mechanisms change from spalling to oxidescale in oxidation and from uniform metal dusting to pitting in metal dusting as the amount of Crincreases in these steels. Pitting corrosion shows higher C carbon concentration in the pits than atlocations away from the pits. A detailed analysis has been performed to evaluate the scale andspalled materials in terms of oxide characterization using XRD, AES, SEM, EDS on SEM, opticalmicroscopy and TEM

    Notes: Abstract The two-dimensional thermal problem due to relative motion of a medium and a suddenly activated circular heat source is solved for several boundary conditions. The solutions can be interpreted as for a moving heat source in a stationary medium or a medium moving past a stationary heat source. Uniform and non-uniform temperature, and uniform and non-uniform heat flux boundary conditions are considered. The effect of velocity and radial direction on the temperature distribution is examined. Average, steady-state Nusselt numbers are derived. The transient response of a continuous line source is obtained as a limiting case of the prescribed heat flux solution.

    Notes: Abstract Inheritance of overweight in humans appears to be under polygenic control. Study on the mouse model may help to determine candidate regions in human genome for the search of overweight genes. Inbred mouse strains showed wide variation in body weight and can provide an experimental model for the study of inheritance of overweight. By genetic linkage analysis, we report the mapping of two loci, named Bw1 and Bw2 (body weight 1 and 2), on Chromosome (Chr) X that strongly affect adult body weight in two interspecific testcross male populations (HSB and ASB) of mice. In addition, another locus, named Bw3, is also mapped on Chr X in ASB populations. These loci account for up to 24% of the phenotypic variation in both populations. Considering the conserved synteny between mouse and human Chr X, these results provide candidate regions on Chr X that can be tested for linkage with overweight in humans.

    Notes: Summary The solution of a new synthesized compound, mono-6-(1'-benzo-aza-15-crown-5)-2, 3, 6- permethyl-β-cyclodextrin, in the moderately polar polysiloxane OV-1701 was coated onto fused silica capillary column. The chromatographic characteristics including column efficiency, polarity and selectivity were studied. Excellent selectivity for the separation of enantiomers and positional isomers was obtained. The results show that the combined effect between the special caves of β-cyclodextrin and crown ether plays a significant role in the separation.

    Notes: Summary In this paper, a new type of [60]fulleropyrrolidine functionalized polysiloxane in which the fullerene moieties were incorporated in the main polysiloxane chain was synthesized the first time and used as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography. It demonstrated high column efficiency (2600–2866 plates m−1, on a 250 μm diameter column, for naphthalenek=3.1–3.2, 120 °C), a wide operational temperature range (90–360 °C) and outstanding thermostability. It can be used at 360 °C with a baseline drift of 5∼8×10−15A. Benzene homologues, aromatic hydrocarbons, polar compounds such as alcohols, esters, ketones, anilines and phthalic diesters can be seperated well on this column.
