    Notes: We have developed a longitudinal emittance monitor for a 7 MeV proton beam provided by the 433 MHz linac at the Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University. In the present system, the beam first hits a thin gold target on the beam line, and a fraction of the scattered protons comes into a small cavity. After deflected by a rf electric field in the cavity, the protons finally reach a position sensitive detector (PSD). The PSD gives the information of the energy and position of the individual scattered proton, which enables us to reconstruct the longitudinal distribution of the beam before colliding with the target. The phase and energy resolution of the system are estimated to be 13° and 23 keV full width at half-maximum, respectively. The longitudinal rms emittance measured was 0.39±0.07 π deg MeV under the nominal operating condition of the linac. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The ovarian structure and batch fecundity of anglerfish Lophiomus setigerus were examined from specimens collected in the East China Sea during March 1991 to September 1995. The right and left ovarian lobes were connected at their posterior ends. Stalk-like ovigerous lamellae protruded from the ovarian wall. During the spawning season, gelatinous material was secreted from the epithelia of both the ovigerous lamellae and ovarian wall, and these epithelia showed morphological changes accompanying the ovarian maturation cycle. Tertiary yolk, migratory nucleus, and mature stage oocytes occurred in the ovaries between May and November, when females with postovulatory follicles and developing vitellogenic oocytes were collected also. These results suggested an extended spawning season during which females undergo repeated spawnings. When the most advanced oocytes attained the secondary yolk stage, they formed a batch that separated from the adjacent group of smaller oocytes. Batch fecundity (F) in 20 females with secondary yolk stage ovaries was related to total length (LT, mm) as F= 556.2 LT1.157 (300≤LT≤396).

    Notes: The reproductive cycle and sexual maturity of the anglerfish Lophiomus setigerus were examined. Spermatids were released from the germinal cysts into the lumina of the seminal lobules, and both spermatids and spermatozoa were present in the lumina of the seminal lobules and sperm ducts. Spermatogenesis and vitellogenesis occurred throughout most of the year. The testes of males were full of spermatozoa throughout the year, with spawning from May to November. Males and females reached sexual maturity at a mean total length and age of 178 mm, 3.3 years and 303 mm, 6.1 years, respectively. There were clear seasonal cycles in the gonadosomatic index (IG) and hepatosomatic index (IH) in females. The mean IG of females increased rapidly with ovarian development while the mean IH decreased from the middle of vitellogenesis to final maturation. Mean values of IG and IH in males increased with testicular development.

    Notes: Abstract Ions of gold monomer and clusters emitted from a liquid metal ion source were mass-selected, and deposited on cleaved HOPG (highly oriented pyrolytic graphite) surfaces and on amorphous carbon thin films at room temperature with the impinging energy E i from 0 to 500 eV. The coverage of deposited ions were 1/100 and 1/1000 monolayers on HOPG surfaces and 1/3 monolayers on carbon films. Scanning tunneling microscopy of the HOPG surfaces deposited with low impinging energy (E i〈50 eV) revealed that large clusters with diameters ranging from 2 to 5 nm and height of 1–2 layers were present instead of isolated monomers and original clusters. When E i was higher than 100 eV, HOPG surfaces were damaged and only bumpy surfaces were observed by STM. Transmission electron microscopy of Au+-deposited carbon films showed the formation of clusters with diameter 0.5–20 nm, depending on the E i and the time elapsed after deposition.

    Notes: Abstract  We demonstrate an electrostatic micro actuator which is fabricated by LIGA process. The actuator is designed for a magnetic head tracking system of hard disk drives (HDDs). The actuator is essential to achieve very high track density of HDDs. We realize the aspect ratio of 125 by the LIGA process using a Si-Au mask. We propose to use PMMA molds both as the mechanical structure and as the insulator between electrodes. We believe there are great opportunity for the LIGA process in making micro actuators of HDDs.

    Notes: Abstract Phase diagrams of liquidlike, alloy crystal-like and amorphous solid-like(AS) structures have been obtained for the exhaustively deionized aqueous suspensions of the binary mixtures of polystyrene or silica spheres. Diameter, polydispersity index (standard deviation of diameter divided by the mean diameter) and size ratio of the binary spheres (diameter of small sphere divided by that of large one) range from 85 to 136 nm, 0.07 to 0.26 and 0.76 to 0.93, respectively. Close-up color photographs of the alloy crystals are taken and the crystal structure has been analysed from reflection spectroscopy. Most of the alloy crystals aresubstitutional solid-solution (sss) type and body-contered cubic lattice structure. Formation of the alloy crystals is attributed to the important role of the expanded electrical double layers in the deionized condition and increase toward unity in the effective size ratio, which is the effective diameter of small sphere including double layer divided by that of large sphere AS structure is formed at the rather high concentrations of two spheres, where the thickness of the electrical double layer is thin and the effective size rado is comparatively small.

    Notes: Abstract Colloidal single crystals of silica spheres (103 nm in diameter) are formed in the presence of various kinds of salts 1 simple electrolytes, i.e., sodium chloride, calcium chloride and lanthanum chloride, 2 polyelectrolytes such as 3–6 type ionen polymer (polybrene), poly-N-ethylpyridinium bromide, a copolymer ofN-benzyl pyridinium chloride andN-hexadecyl pyridinium bromide, and sodium polyethylene sulfonate, and 3 cationic and anionic detergents, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium dodecylsulfate. Shape and size of their single crystals, phase diagram, and the relationship between the two parameters among the critical concentration of melting, conductance and pH of the crystal-like suspensions have been studied. Colloidal single crystals ofpositively charged spheres have been formed in this study by the method of the charge reversal of spheres through the strong adsorption of cationic polyelectrolytes onto the anionic silica spheres.

    Notes: We study the linearized stability of planer flows of incompressible, viscous fluid in two-dimensional annular domains. A certain family of steady, explicit solutions which have spiral streamlines are considered. The Navier-Stokes equations are linearized at these solutions and we show analytically or numerically that these solutions are stable to perturbation of steady states, whatever the Reynolds number or the aspect ratio of the annuli may be. Hopf bifurcations from them are also examined numerically. © 1997 B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

    Notes: We examined the influence of the proportion of glass-ceramic powder in a bioactive bone cement of our formula on the bone-bonding ability of cement. Changes in cement bonding with time also were examined. The bioactive bone cement consisted of MgO-CaO-SiO2-P2O5-CaF2 glass-ceramic powder (AW-GC powder) and bisphenol-α-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA)-based resin. AW-GC powder was added to the cement as 0%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 80% w/w. Rectangular plates (2 × 10 × 15 mm) of each cement with polished surfaces were implanted into the proximal metaphysis of the tibiae of male rabbits, and the failure load was measured by detaching tests 10 and 25 weeks after implantation. The failure loads of each cement were 0% = 0.03, 30% = 1.52, 50% = 2.67, 70% = 3.56, and 80% = 5.59 kg at 10 weeks, and 0% = 0.05, 30% = 1.68, 50% = 2.77, 70% = 3.80, and 80% = 6.37 kg at 25 weeks. Observation of the cement-bone interface revealed that all bioactive bone cements (30%-80%) formed direct contact with bone whereas intervening fibrous tissue was observed in all specimens of the 0% group. By scanning electron microscopy, all bioactive bone cements (30%-80% groups) showed direct contact with bone at the cement-bone interface. In the 0% group, direct contact with bone at the cement-bone interface was not observed. By electron-probe microanalysis, a Ca-P-rich layer was not detected at the cement-bone interfaces of the 30%-70% bioactive bone cements, but in some samples of the 80% cement specimens a thin Ca-P-rich layer (3 μm thick) was observed at the interface at 10 and 25 weeks after implantation. These results show that all of the bioactive bone cements tested had the ability to bond to bone and to function as bioactive composites of ceramics and polymers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
