    Beschreibung: This dataset was compiled for a review paper examining the transformation of n-alkanes from plant to soil. Data is included from 37 different studies at various locations. Various climate and soil parameters are included along with the individual n-alkane data when available. Data from open plant-soil systems where the n-alkane composition of soil profiles and plant source material was measured are included as well as data from litterbag experiments during which the change in n-alkane composition over time was measured. All of the included studies were performed within the last 30 years. Although the majority of the included studies were performed in Europe, there are some from other regions around the globe. The purpose for collecting the data was to systematically study how the composition of n-alkanes changed from plant to soil using available data. Our review supported the conclusions that the total concentration of n-alkanes decreases with time and with depth and that there is preferential degradation of odd-chain lengths and shorter chain lengths.

    Beschreibung: This dataset provides palaeoecological and sedimentological data for the Late-glacial and Holocene sediment sequence retrieved from Lake Uddelermeer (The Netherlands) in 2012. Counts of pollen and chironomids are presented against both depth (cm) and age (cal yr. BP), and a loss-on ignition record is presented against depth. A total of 110 samples were analysed for their pollen content; a subset of 32 samples was analysed for sterol and stanol compounds. A total of 1412 samples were analysed for their organic content, approximated through loss-on-ignition. The data provides information on changes in the local and regional vegetation, changes in the within-lake ecosystem and changes in minerogenic input into the lake. The dataset has been used to identify Holocene lake level changes at the site. Cores were retrieved from the centre of the lake using a 3-m long handheld piston corer deployed from a floating coring platform during field work in April and May 2012. Samples were obtained from splits of the core and processed in the laboratory of the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) using standard protocols. Individual pollen grains and chironomid head capsules were identified using high-power microscopy, and loss-on-ignition was determined using combustion in a 550C oven.     Beschreibung: The late Holocene development of a raised ombrotrophic peat bog in the Thuringian Forest in Central Germany was investigated using pollen, plant macrofossils, lipid biomarker, elemental, and radiocarbon analyses. In October 2019, a 3.4 m core was recovered from the Beerberg peatland located in the Vessertal-Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve. Radiocarbon dating and a resulting age-depth model indicated that the age of the peatland is ca. 2600 yr BP. The purpose of the study was twofold: establishing a paleovegetation record with a reliable chronology for the Thuringian Forest and comparing the results of the pollen and plant macrofossil analyses to that of the lipid biomarker analysis to determine what additional insight the biomarkers could provide. Along with the counting of pollen and plant macrofossils, the carbon and nitrogen concentrations and their stable isotope values were measured from the bulk samples via elemental analyzer, and the absolute concentrations of n-alkanes, n-alkanols, and n-fatty acids were measured by gas chromatography flame ionization detection. The radiocarbon dates were measured by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry. Modern plant samples were also collected from the peatland during sampling, separated into leaf, stem, and root tissue as much as was possible, and the absolute concentrations of the n-alkanes, n-alkanols, and n-fatty acids were measured for each plant part.
