Notes: Abstract The electric surface charge configuration of 3T3 and SV40-3T3 cells was characterized by determining the product of electrophoretic mobility of the cells times the viscosity of suspension medium. This quantity could be shown to change with temperature and/or treatment with calf serum or trypsin in close correlation with the effects of these agents on characteristics of cell proliferation. The present results, taken together with those of earlier studies on cell-electrophoresis and characterization of lipid constituents of the cells, support the hypothesis of a lateral phase separation in the plasmamembrane as triggering process in stimulation of proliferation of resting normal cells.

Notes: Summary The biological activity of several gibberellin (GA) conjugates was studied and compared with that of the corresponding free GAs. The following conjugates were included: O(3)-β-d-glucopyranosides of GA1, GA3 and GA4; O(13)-β-d-glucopyranosides of GA1, GA3 and GA5; O(13)-β-d-glucopyranosyl-GA5-β-d-glucopyranosyl ester; GA3-β-d-glucopyranosyl ester and GA3-α-d-glucopyranosyl ester; N-GA3-oyl-glycine, its methyl ester, N-GA3-oyl-glycylglycine, and N-GA3-oyl-proline. All compounds were synthesized chemically but some of them are known to occur as endogenous plant products, or to be formed in plants upon application of a free GA. Activity was determined in the dwarf pea, dwarf corn, dwarf rice, and lettuce hypocotyl bioassays. The GA conjugates were found to posses different relative activities depending on the chemical structure, the bioassay system, and the site of application (shoot or roots). It is concluded that the activity of GA conjugates as measured in different bioassays is based upon the ability of plant enzymes and possibly of certain microorganisms to hydrolyze glucosidic, glucosyl ester, and amide-like linkages.

Notes: Summary Regulation of ion transport through the plasma membrane was studied on single cell suspensions of hepatocytes, obtained after perfusion of rat liver with collagenase/hyaluronidase solution. Steady-state intracellular K and Na contents were shown to be markedly dependent on external Ca concentration and temperature, the sum of both ion concentrations remaining nearly constant. In contrast, steady-state intracellular chloride content was found to be independent of external Ca concentration, but dependent on temperature. Using the constant field relations, the passive permeabilitiesP K andP Cl for potassium and chloride, respectively, were derived from the experimental data. At temperatures at and above 37°C, with increasing external Ca concentration,P K exhibits a sharp decrease at about 10−4 m. In contrast,P Cl at 37°C was found to be independent of Ca concentration within experimental error. Earth alkali ions other than Ca, show marked but different effects onP K if compared at equal concentrations. Preincubation of the cells with cholesterol leads to a broadening of the dependence ofP K on external Ca concentration. The above results, as well as those on the dependence ofP K on external Ca concentration obtained by other authors, could be quantitatively described by a theoretical model of the plasma membrane proposed earlier. This model postulates regulatory binding sites, which cooperatively undergo a cation exchange of divalent cations by K+ ions from the external medium, if the cation composition of the latter is altered.

Notes: Abstract The effect of annealing on the mechanical and thermal properties of polycarbonate resin has been investigated. The previously observed increases in yield strength and decreases in impact strength have been confirmed and it has been shown further that annealed polymer shows a larger strain softening effect after yield than untreated material. This is reflected in an increased negative slope in the stress-strain curve. After yielding the endothermic D.S.C. peak due to annealing is largely eliminated. The extra mechanical energy required to deform the annealed polymer is similar in magnitude to the thermal energy associated with the D.S.C. peak. The reduction in impact strength during annealing is ascribed to greater plastic instability and to the consequent reduction in volume of the zone of plastic yielding in the impact test. This conclusion is confirmed by the examination of annealed and untreated impact test pieces in polarized light.

Notes: Conclusions 1. Under the action of light with λ ≥ 330 nm, 3-dehydrogibberellin A3 (I) and its methyl ester (Ia) add to acetylene with the formation of adducts containing a cyclobutene ring in the 1α,2α-position. The reaction takes place more slowly but more stereospecifically than the addition of these same enones to ethylene. 2. The adducts which were prepared under the action of light with λ ≥ 300 nm can undergo a photochemical 1,3-acyl shift leading to the corresponding 1β,2β-stereoisomer.

Notes: The positive ion mass spectrum of allogibberic acid was examined and fragmentation routes involving the carbon skeleton are proposed on the basis of mass measurements and metastable ion observations. The results are compared with the mass spectra of 3-hydroxy-epiallogibberic acid, as well as gibberellin A3 (GA3), 3-epi-GA3, 3-dehydro-GA3 and iso-GA3, the latter compounds all being capable of undergoing aromatization of ring A giving a key ion corresponding to the molecular ions of the allogibberic acid and 3-hydroxy-epiallogibberic acid models, respectively. All the gibberellin derivatives investigated show the same fragmentation of the skeleton. Thus, the behaviour under electron impact of the GA3 type gibberellins follows a general pattern.
