    Notes: Abstract The posterior colon of worker-caste termites accommdates an abundant, heterogeneous population of procaryotic organisms which are retained by attachment to prominent cuticular spines elaborated from the gut wall. The spines extend to nearly one half the diameter of the lumen and are each supported by a specialized root cell in which bundles of parallel microtubules traverse the cytoplasm from the apical to the basal surfaces. Additional epithelial cells are present which show infoldings of the apical plasma membrane and are overlain by cuticle containing deep, vase-shaped pits opening to the gut lumen. It is proposed that the root cells are designed to resist shearing forces transmitted to the base of each spine during contractions of the gut. The cuticular pits may represent sites of permeability to the end products of microbial metabolism.

    Notes: Summary Mature columnar cells of the midgut of Cubitermes contain a prominent secretion product observed at light- and electron-microscopic levels. At the ultrastructural level the product is resolved as an electron dense material contained in vesicles up to 1 μm diameter that accumulate in the apical cytoplasm. The vesicles are composite, apparently formed by coalescence of at least two types of precursor vesicle both of which originate from the Golgi apparatus. Discharge of the product takes place by exocytosis into intercellular space at or in the vicinity of the apical septate junction complex. Augmentation of apical surface area by microvilli is less prominent in Cubitermes than in other termites for which data are available. This and other evidence suggests that absorptive functions are reduced in the midgut of this insect.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Trois années d'étude deScymnodes lividigaster (Mulsant) dans les conditions naturelles près de Sydney ont montré que la proportion des sexes était 50∶50. Les proportions varient selon les échantillons prélevés à différentes périodes de l'année et suivant les années. Les variations dépendent des méthodes de prélèvement, des conditions de milieu et du comportement des sexes aux différentes étapes de leur développement. L'échantillonnage deLeptothea galbula (Mulsant) dans 2 habitats différents a mis en évidence des proportions des sexes favorables aux femelles, sans relation apparente avec les méthodes de collecte et avec peu de dépendance avec la saison. Au laboratoire la proportion de sexes deL. galbula était voisine de 50∶50.
    Notes: Abstract A 3 year field study ofScymnodes lividigaster (Mulsant) adults near Sydney indicated sex ratios close to 50∶50, ♀∶♂. Ratios deviated between samples collected in various periods of year and in individual years. Deviation was related to collecting methods, environmental conditions and behaviour of sexes in different developmental phases. SamplingLeptothea galbula (Mulsant) in 2 different habitats indicated all sex ratios biased towards ♀; ratios apparently not related to collecting methods and with little seasonality. In laboratory sex ratios ofL. galbula were close to 50∶50.

    Notes: A cage implant system was utilized to quantitatively and qualitatively characterize in vivo leukocyte interactions with cast Biomer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in conjunction with cytochemical staining procedures were used to investigate the cellular events at the leukocyte/Biomer interface as well as in the inflammatory exudate over a 21-day implantation period. SEM was used to characterize leukocyte morphology on the Biomer surface and the cytochemical stains were used to differentially count leukocytes and to demonstrate intracellular alkaline and acid phosphatase activity. The results showed that the population density of leukocytes on the Biomer surface diminished with implantation time. The population density of multinucleated foreign body giant cells remained constant with time, while the numbers of nuclei per giant cell increased. The differential analysis revealed that macrophages preferentially adhered to the Biomer surface compared to other leukocytes in the exudate. The phagocytic capability of all adherent leukocytes, including giant cells, decreased with time and this corresponded to changes in leukocyte morphology observed with SEM.

    Notes: A new hydrogel material has been prepared by crosslinking a hydrophilic, nonionic poly(amino acid), poly(2-hydroxyethyl-L-glutamine). The material properties of the hydrogel can be controlled by variation in the crosslink density, and the swelling ratio was found to be a sensitive and convenient method for measuring the extent of in vivo biodegradation of implanted specimens. Degradation of the material was observed only during the first 2 weeks of subcutaneous implantation in rats, and is attributed to hydrolysis by proteolytic enzymes released during the acute and chronic stages of the normal inflammatory response.

    Notes: A semiempirical epitaxial model has been derived which correlates and interrelates the surface free energy, ultrastructural morphology, surface charge, surface chemistry, and surface molecular motions of a model triblock copolymer to thrombogenesis. This paper addresses the aspect of: (1) ultrastructure order versus disorder, (2) primary and secondary molecular motions, (3) surface and side chain chemistry, (4) thrombogenesis, and (5) the derived epitaxial model based on the above observations. This model can be extrapolated to include and predict the relative thrombogenic responses of various crystalline and semicrystalline polymeric substrates, i.e., aliphatic polyolefins, polyurethanes, and polypeptides.
