    Description: Different Earth orientation parameter (EOP) time series are publicly available that typically arise from the combination of individual space geodetic technique solutions. The applied processing strategies and choices lead to systematically differing signal and noise characteristics particularly at the shortest periods between 2 and 8 days. We investigate the consequences of typical choices by introducing new experimental EOP solutions obtained from combinations at either normal equation level processed by Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut at the Technical University of Munich (DGFI‐TUM) and Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), or observation level processed by European Space Agency (ESA). All those experiments contribute to an effort initiated by ESA to develop an independent capacity for routine EOP processing and prediction in Europe. Results are benchmarked against geophysical model‐based effective angular momentum functions processed by Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences (ESMGFZ). We find, that a multitechnique combination at normal equation level that explicitly aligns a priori station coordinates to the ITRF2014 frequently outperforms the current International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) standard solution 14C04. A multi‐Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)‐only solution already provides very competitive accuracies for the equatorial components. Quite similar results are also obtained from a short combination at observation level experiment using multi‐GNSS solutions and SLR from Sentinel‐3A and Sentinel‐3B to realize space links. For ΔUT1, however, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) information is known to be critically important so that experiments combining only GNSS and possibly SLR at observation level perform worse than combinations of all techniques at normal equation level. The low noise floor and smooth spectra obtained from the multi‐GNSS solution nevertheless illustrates the potential of this most rigorous combination approach so that further efforts to include in particular VLBI are strongly recommended.

    Description: Satellite altimetry observations have provided a significant contribution to the understanding of global sea surface processes, particularly allowing for advances in the accuracy of ocean tide estimations. Currently, almost three decades of satellite altimetry are available which can be used to improve the understanding of ocean tides by allowing for the estimation of an increased number of minor tidal constituents. As ocean tide models continue to improve, especially in the coastal region, these minor tides become increasingly important. Generally, admittance theory is used by most global ocean tide models to infer several minor tides from the major tides when creating the tidal correction for satellite altimetry. In this paper, regional studies are conducted to compare the use of admittance theory to direct estimations of minor tides from the EOT20 model to identify which minor tides should be directly estimated and which should be inferred. The results of these two approaches are compared to two global tide models (TiME and FES2014) and in situ tide gauge observations. The analysis showed that of the eight tidal constituents studied, half should be inferred (2N2, ϵ2, MSF and T2), while the remaining four tides (J1, L2, μ2 and ν2) should be directly estimated to optimise the ocean tidal correction. Furthermore, for certain minor tides, the other two tide models produced better results than the EOT model, suggesting that improvements can be made to the tidal correction made by EOT when incorporating tides from the two other tide models. Following on from this, a new approach of merging tidal constituents from different tide models to produce the ocean tidal correction for satellite altimetry that benefits from the strengths of the respective models is presented. This analysis showed that the tidal correction created based on the recommendations of the tide gauge analysis provided the highest reduction of sea-level variance. Additionally, the combination of the EOT20 model with the minor tides of the TiME and FES2014 model did not significantly increase the sea-level variance. As several additional minor tidal constituents are available from the TiME model, this opens the door for further investigations into including these minor tides and optimising the tidal correction for improved studies of the sea surface from satellite altimetry and in other applications, such as gravity field modelling.

    Description: This work presents a new extension to B-Splines that enables them to model functions on directed tree graphs such as non-braided river networks. The main challenge of the application of B-splines to graphs is their definition in the neighbourhood of nodes with more than two incident edges. Achieving that the B-splines are continuous at these points is non-trivial. For both, simplification reasons and in view of our application, we limit the graphs to directed tree graphs. To fulfil the requirement of continuity, the knots defining the B-Splines need to be located symmetrically along the edges with the same direction. With such defined B-Splines, we approximate the topography of the Mekong River system from scattered height data along the river. To this end, we first test and validate successfully the method with synthetic water level data, with and without added annual signal. The quality of the resulting heights is assessed besides others by means of root mean square errors (RMSE) and mean absolute differences (MAD). The RMSE values are 0.26 m and 1.05 m without and with added annual variation respectively and the MAD values are even lower with 0.11 m and 0.60 m. For the second test, we use real water level observations measured by satellite altimetry. Again, we successfully estimate the river topography, but also discuss the short comings and problems with unevenly distributed data. The unevenly distributed data leads to some very large outliers close to the upstream ends of the rivers tributaries and in regions with rapidly changing topography such as the Mekong Falls. Without the outlier removal the standard deviation of the resulting heights can be as large as 50 m with a mean value of 15.73 m. After the outlier removal the mean standard deviation drops to 8.34 m.
