The classical problem of plane-wave diffraction by half-plane is extended to allow for loss in the surrounding medium. The loss causes the arguments of the integral functions to become complex. Numerical results show that the relative importance of the edge-diffracted field decreases as the loss is increased. This effect is important in interpreting the effects of off-path scatterers in remote sensing of lossy media. The results for both electric and magnetic polarizations are in qualitative agreement with previous results based on the Kirchhoff approximation [D. A. Hill, J. Appl. Phys. 69, 1772 (1991)].
