Notes: Using polycapillary X-ray optics, the intensity of the Cu Kα radiation from a Rigaku RU200 rotating-anode generator was increased remarkably compared with Supper double focusing mirrors. A crystal of a double mutant of trichosanthin diffracted beyond 1.9 Å with the application of the polycapillary optics and 2.0 Å resolution data with an overall R_{\rm sym} of 8.4% were collected, while the same crystal only diffracted to about 2.62 Å using the radiation from double focusing mirrors. A small crystal of acidic phospholipase A2 from snake venom diffracted to 2.2 Å employing the polycapillary optics and the overall R_{\rm sym} for the data collected was 8.6%. The same crystal only diffracted to about 2.7 Å using double focusing mirrors. The average intensity of reflections and the signal-to-noise ratio for both of the crystals increased dramatically with the application of the polycapillary X-ray optics. This new kind of X-ray optic has been used to collect good-quality diffraction data for a number of protein crystals.

Notes: Abstract The China International Engineering Consulting Corporation undertook, in 1997, the study of Viability of Asset Based Road Corporations in China as part of the World Bank's transport sector program review. The purpose was to investigate, in a case study format, road administration in China with two specific objectives: to compare (toll) road management in different provinces and to investigate the financial viability of China's toll roads. This paper shows that the three case projects studied, each having different management structures, are all financially viable given the present financing arrangements. However, should the projects be immediately subject to market interest rates and loan maturities prevailing in China today, their financial viability would be uncertain. In a broader context, the World Bank's lending program has enabled China to experiment with different kinds of toll road management structures. These models have both advantages and disadvantages and seem to fit that province's political economic environment in which they are employed. The toll roads and, especially, the impacts of the toll road management and financing arrangements on road administration present challenges to road administration rarely faced even in the developed countries. The challenges involve questions of the congruence of public good and private interest, as well as the role of planning and public accountability – all serious questions as China moves forward in development. These questions are raised in the context of the case studies.

Notes: Abstract A series of binuclear macrocyclic copper(II) complexes [Cu2Lm,n](ClO4)2·xH2O have been prepared in which the two copper(II) ions are placed in two geometrically distinct co-ordination environments. The macrocycles with two 2,6-bis(iminomethyl)-4-methylphenol entities combined through two different lateral chains, –(–CH2–)–m and –(–CH2–)–n (m = 2 or 3, n = 2 to 5) were synthesized by stepwise cyclization. Cyclic voltammetry shows the presence of two reduction couples: CuIICuII CuICuII and CuIICuI CuICuI. The comproportionation constants, Kcom, for the mixed valence CuICuII complexes have been determined electrochemically. The Kcom value increases in the order of the macrocycles: (L2,2)2−〈(L2,3)2−〈(L2,4)2−〈(L2,5)2− and (L3,3)2−〈(L3,4)2−〈(L3,5)2−. Cryomagnetic investigations (80–300K) reveal a moderately strong antiferromagnetic spin exchange between the copper(II) ions within each complex (J = −210 to −390 cm−1).

Notes: Abstract Several monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and novel mAb-based assays for the androgen receptors (AR) have been developed. Large amounts of the recombinant human AR protein produced by a baculovirus expression system were used as an antigen to produce mAbs. Twenty-nine AR-specific mAbs were first confirmed by Western blot analysis and were then characterized for their immunoglobulin isotypes, epitopes, and epitope localization in AR. Novel assays using flow cytometry and sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) were established to detect AR-expressing cells and to quantify soluble AR protein, respectively. Using immunostaining, we identified several anti-AR mAbs exclusively recognizing AR within the nuclei of the prostate cancer cell line LNCaP and of prostate tissues in both frozen and paraffin-embedded sections, whereas other mAbs could detect AR in both nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments. Interestingly, certain mAbs, such as G122-25 and G122-77, could distinguish the androgen-bound AR from the unoccupied AR. In sum, many purified AR protein and anti-AR mAbs, together with the assays developed, could be powerful tools for the study of functional AR and for the diagnosis of prostatic cancers.

Notes: Abstract A series of new types of semiconducting ceramic gas-sensing materials, Al2O3-based semiconducting ceramics, have been invented. Hydrogen and methane gas sensors have been made from these materials with different metal oxide additives. These gas sensors have various advantages, such as very good gas selectivity, nearly linear relationship between sensitivity and gas concentration, lower operating temperature, fast recovery time, and good anti-humidity property. The preparation and properties of these semiconducting ceramic gas sensors are presented in this paper.
