Notes: Zero-field muon-spin-relaxation (μSR) and X-band ESR have been used to study the spin-freezing dynamics in single crystals of the Ising spin glass Fe2−x Ti1+x O5 . Parameters obtained for the power-law and Vogel–Fulcher descriptions of the critical slowing are consistent with other methods for x=0 and indicate significantly slower freezing in Ti-rich samples. Interpretation of cluster effects, observed in x=0.25-μSR data, as a Griffiths-like phase yields an estimate of 61±1 K for the Néel temperature in site-ordered Fe2 TiO5 .

Notes: Examination of Auger transition structures of As and x-ray photoelectron spectra of Si indicates a strong influence of the As ion implantation stage on the surface characteristics of (100) silicon. Rapid thermal annealing resulted in the electrical activation of a major portion of arsenic in the implanted zone, but a shallow region confined within a depth of ≈200 A(ring) from the surface contained As complexed with Si and O atoms. Surface characterization results agree with the observed degradation in transport properties of solar cells constructed on the As+ implanted and rapidly annealed (100) p-silicon substrates.

Notes: Abstract An immunofluorescence technique was employed to detect the thraustochytrid protist Ulkenia visurgensis (Ulken) Gaertner, originally isolated from an algal bed, in natural samples in Goa, India. Collections were made monthly from September 1985 to November 1986. By treating the samples with antiserum prepared against this organism and conjugated with FITC stain, the protist was regularly found to occur in association with a hydroid. Several cells of the organism were observed in the coelenteron and the hydranth of the hydroid. The thraustochytrid could be repeatedly isolated in cultures from the hydroid. The cells of the protist differed from those in culture in that they lacked ectoplasmic net elements.

Notes: Abstract A procedure is described for the extraction of DNA and RNA from solitary and colonial ascidians obtained on the east coast of Australia. Modifications to more established procedures have been made to avoid nuclease digestion, binding to polyphenolic compounds and other less well characterized pigments that interfere with the use of nucleic acids for restriction-enzyme analysis and gene-cloning. Tissue is homogenized in liquid nitrogen to produce a powder which is washed three times in 0.25 M ammonium acetate, pH 5.0, to remove a variety of contaminants. This is followed by lysis and immediate extraction in a number of different phenol/CHCl3/isoamyl alcohol mixtures. Additional steps are similar to those described in previous methods. Extraction of RNA by this procedure precludes the necessity for addition of ribonuclease inhibitors.

Notes: We present here a method for superposing creep measurements on polymer concrete (PC), taken at different temperatures, imposed stresses, and resin contents, onto master curves, which describe the respective responses of various PC systems and their resin binders, to compressive, tensile, and flexural loads. This treatment is extended to systems reinforced with chopped glass fiber and montmorillonite (MMT). The general applicability of this superposition is tested with creep measurements by other investigators under tensile, compressive, and flexural loads. The results make it possible to predict the long-term creep behavior of unfilled as well as reinforced glassy polymer systems at different temperatures and load conditions from limited, short-term data. Success of the multiple superposition suggests a generalized constitutive equation, which describes the creep compliance of these systems as a product of separable functions of each parameter in the form of shift factors for temperature (αT), stress (ασ), resin content (αυ), fiber reinforcement (αF), and MMT reinforcement (αM): J(PC) = JrαTασαυαFαMtm, where Jr is an appropriately chosen reference creep compliance. The time exponent m does not depend on the chemical nature of the polymer matrix.

Notes: Abstract Differential cross sections for state-to-state rotationally inelastic electron-Na2 scattering, with the molecule being in the vibrational levelv′'=31, are measured at a collision energy of 150 eV. Angular momentum transfer of up to Δj=26 is observed, which is even more than previously obtained for the vibrational ground statev′'=0. Good agreement is found with theoretical results from a spectator scattering model. This work, in general, elucidates the role of vibrational excitation in collision dynamics under vibrationally sudden conditions.

Notes: The behavior of solute partial molar enthalpies in dilute supercritical mixtures gives rise to the well-known phenomenon of retrograde solubility (equilibrium solubility decreasing with increasing temperature at constant pressure). A mechanistic interpretation of this phenomenon in terms of the formation of large clusters of solvent molecules around solute molecules is consistent with experimentally observed retrograde behavior. Cluster formation occurs as a consequence of the unbounded increase in the solvent's compressibility arbitrarily close to the latter's critical point. At infinite dilution, the solute's partial molar volume and enthalpy grow linearly with cluster size. This means that the negative divergence of these quantities is simply a macroscopic manifestation of a “condensation” in which an increasing number of solvent molecules cluster around solute molecules. Arbitrarily close to the solvent's critical point, scaling relationships show that the decay of both solvent-solvent and solute-solvent correlation functions exhibits the same radial dependence. This functionality is thus solute-independent, and is determined exclusively by the proximity to the solvent's critical point. The locus along which thermal effects associated with cluster formation are maximized is arbitrarliy close to the solvent's critical isochore as the latter's critical point is approached.
