Notes: Abstract Sm-Nd whole-rock and mineral data for the Kings River ophiolite define two isochrons of 485±21 Ma and 285±45 Ma age with ε Nd (483)= +10.7±0.5 and εNd (285)= +9.9±1.1, respectively. The 483 Ma isochron is defined by samples of the main igneous construct. Samples from crosscutting diabase dikes and flaser gabbro sheets within the peridotite unit yield the 285 Ma isochron. The 483 Ma data provide the first evidence of lower Paleozoic oceanic crust in the Sierran ophiolite belt. New U-Pb analyses of zircons from a plagiogranite lying on the 483 Ma Sm-Nd isochron yield upper and lower intercepts with the concordia of 430 −60 +200 and 183±15 Ma. Published zircon ages have underestimated the primary age of the ophiolite by 200–300 m.y. due to the effects of polymetamorphism. The 483 Ma samples have initial 87Sr/86Sr=0.7023–0.7030, 206Pb/204Pb=17.14–17.82, 207Pb/204Pb=15.37–15.52, 208Pb/204Pb=36.80–37.38. The 285 Ma samples have similar initial 87Sr/86Sr, but more radiogenic Pb. The range in Sr and Pb compositions is probably due to introduction of radiogenic Sr and Pb during multiple post-emplacement metamorphic events. The high ε Nd, low 87Sr/86Sr, 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/204Pb of the least disturbed samples are clearly diagnostic of a midocean ridge origin for the 483 Ma portion of the ophiolite. Igneous activity at 285 Ma is thought to have occurred in an arc or back-arc setting, or perhaps along a leaky transform. The initial ε Nd (483)=+10.7 is indistinguishable from that of the similar age Trinity Peridotite (Jacobsen et al. 1984). This value is the highest yet reported for the Mesozoic or Paleozoic depleted mantle and requires either a mantle source that was depleted ∼ 850 m.y. earlier than average or a source more highly depleted than average. Alternatively, if such values were more typical of the early Paleozoic mantle than is currently thought, then there has been little evolution of the depleted mantle over the last ∼ 500 m.y. This requires that the modern mantle has been refluxed by material with low εNd, such as continental crust.

Description: An Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic analysis of Archean chert samples from the Onverwacht Group, South Africa is presented, showing the same characteristic Rb and Sr concentrations as Phanerozoic cherts, with a very large range of Rb-87/Sr-86 ratios. A good correlation line in the Rb-87 to Sr-87 evolution diagram, corresponding to an age of about 2119 My and an initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio of about 0.72246, is derived which may be interpreted as reflecting the age of rehomogenization of the Sr in the protolith and the recrystallization of these cherts due to circulating hydrothermal fluids during regional metamorphism about 1.4 AE after deposition of the Onverwacht Group. The Sm-Nd systematics reflect an ancient source age of about 3.5 AE.

Description: An analysis of marine and lacustrine cherts demonstrates that Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd systems may be used in elucidating the origin and evolution of cherts, and that the Rb-Sr system may be used for dating. All samples have high Rb/Sr ratios, and though the site of these elements in cherts was not established, they appear to be correlated with Al content. Sm/Nd ratios were typical of continental sources, and the results show the Rb-Sr system in cherts to be isolated from the associated carbonate, with little Sr exchange. Data suggest that in many cases cherts are formed by dissolved SiO2 nucleating on clay-like material which preserves the isotropic characteristics of the detrital source, while in some cases it is possible that cherts were formed from silica-saturated waters from a nonmarine source.

Description: The relationship between the Nd isotopic composition in the Atlantic waters and the origin and circulation of the water masses was investigated. Samples were collected in the western North Atlantic between 7 and 54 deg N. The isotopic composition (Nd-143/Nd-144 ratios) showed extensive vertical structure at all locations. In regions where a thermocline was well-developed, large isotopic shifts were observed across the base of the thermocline, while regions without a thermocline were characterized by much more gradual shifts in isotopic composition with depth. The data reveal an excellent correlation between the Nd isotopic distribution in the western North Atlantic water column and the distribution of water masses identified from temperature and salinity measurements.

Description: The development of mass spectrometric techniques for determination of Th-230 abundance has made it possible to reduce analytical errors in (U-238)-(U-234)-(Th-230) dating of corals even with very small samples. Samples of 6 x 10 to the 8th atoms of Th-230 can be measured to an accuracy of + or - 3 percent (2sigma), and 3 x 10 to the 10th atoms of Th-230 can be measured to an accuracy of + or - 0.2 percent. The time range over which useful age data on corals can be obtained now ranges from about 50 to about 500,000 years. For young corals, this approach may be preferable to C-14 dating. The precision with which the age of a coral can now be determined should make it possible to critically test the Milankovitch hypothesis concerning Pleistocene climate fluctuations. Analyses of a number of corals that grew during the last interglacial period yield ages of 122,000 to 130,000 years. The ages coincide with, or slightly post-date, the summer solar insolation high at 65 deg N latitude which occurred 128,000 years ago. This supports the idea that changes in Pleistocene climate can be the result of variations in the distribution of solar insolation caused by changes in the geometry of the earth's orbit and rotation axis.

Description: A method is presented for the high-precision measurement of the Th-230 abundance in corals by isotope-dilution mass spectrometry using techniques developed by Chen and Wasserburg (1980, 1981) and Chen et al. (1986). It is shown that 6 x 10 to the 8th atoms of Th-230 can be measured to + or - 30 percent (2 sigma) and 2 x 10 to the 10th atoms of Th-230 to + or - 2 percent. The time over which useful age data on corals can be obtained ranges from a few years to about 500 ky, with the uncertainty in age ranging from 5 y for a 180-y-old coral, to 44 y for a 8294-y-old coral, to 1.1 ky for a 123.1-ky-old coral. Ages were determined with high analytical precision for several corals that grew during high sea-level stands about 120 ky ago, supporting the view that the dominant cause of Pleistocene climate change was Milankovitch forcing.

Description: This paper presents the first isotopic measurements, made with an ion microprobe, of Mg, Fe, Mo, Ru, and W in Fremdlinge and refractory metal nuggets from Allende meteorite. No non-mass-dependent deviations exceeding 1 percent from normal solar isotopic abundances were found for any of the elements analyzed, despite the unusual mineralogy of Fremdlinge and the extreme enrichment in refractory siderophile elements. It is concluded that the chemical, petrologic, and isotopic data on Fremdlinge are most plausibly interpreted in terms of the origin of Fremdlinge within the solar nebula.

Description: A detailed petrographic and chemical study of Zelda (a gigantic sulfide-rich Fremdling from the Allende Ca-rich inclusion, CAI, Egg 6) and its contact with the host was conducted using analytical SEM and electron-microprobe techniques, and the results were compared with those obtained on other sulfide-rich and oxide-rich Fremdlinge. Strong evidence is presented that Zelda, a type-example of sulfide-rich Fremdlinge, has been formed from a preexisting Ur-Fremdling, similar by composition to Willy, by closed-system sulfidization of magnetite and metal. At least two different sulfidization mechanisms appear to have occurred in altering Fremdlinge: one producing compositionally homogeneous equigranular objects such as Zelda, the other producing compositionally and texturally heterogeneous objects.
