    Notes: Abstract A novel method for the pulse shortening of the 578 nm spectral line from a CuBr laser is proposed in this paper. By amplifying a seeded picosecond dye laser through the active medium of a CuBr laser, nearly Fourier-transform-limited picosecond pulses of the CuBr laser have been obtained and the output characteristics are also investigated in detail.

    Notes: Time domain diode laser absorption spectroscopy has been used to measure state-specific energy deposition in the vibrational, rotational, and translational degrees of freedom of CO2 following the 248 nm photolysis of ozone in a low pressure mixture of CO2, O3, and O2. Nascent rotational population distributions have been measured in a number of low-lying CO2 vibrational levels, including 0000, 0110, 0220, 0200, 0330, 1000, and 0001. In addition, measurements of CO2 translational excitation have been obtained for the majority of the rovibrational states which were probed. The results suggest that the prompt absorption signals observed so far arise from inelastic scattering between CO2 and the translationally hot O(1D) and O2(1Δ) photofragments rather than electronic quenching of O(1D) to O(3P) by collisions with CO2. Simple calculations indicate that the latter process should provide substantially more CO2 rotational and translational excitation than is observed here.

    Notes: The vibrationally inelastic scattering of OCS by hot hydrogen atoms was studied using an excimer laser photolysis/diode laser probe technique. Nascent rotational distributions for the 1000 (2062 cm−1) and 0001 (859 cm−1) stretching vibrations are well fit to Boltzmann temperatures of 840±50 and 545±60 K, respectively. The total vibrational excitation probability of the 0001 state was about 2.3±0.3 times that of the 1000 state. Measurement of OCS linewidths immediately after hot atom collisions indicate translational recoil temperatures that vary from 360 to 730 K, with a positive dependence on rotational state. The results are interpreted in terms of repulsive, hard shell collisions with the different stretching vibrations arising from trajectories approaching different ends of the OCS molecule.

    Notes: The vibrational excitation probability of the Fermi doublet states of CO2 has been determined following collisions with hot electrons and hot H(D) atoms. Similar, though not identical excitation probabilities are found for the two strongly mixed Fermi states in hot H(D) atom scattering; however, there is a dramatic preference for the upper energy member of this Fermi mixed pair in electron scattering experiments.

    Notes: The production of exoenzyme S is correlated with the ability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to disseminate from epithelial colonization sites and cause a fatal sepsis in burn injury and acute lung infection models. Exoenzyme S is purified from culture supernatants as a non-covalent aggregate of two polypeptides, ExoS and ExoT. ExoS and ExoT are encoded by separate but highly similar genes, exoS and exoT. Clinical isolates that injure lung epithelium in vivo and that are cytotoxic in vitro possess exoT but lack exoS, suggesting that ExoS is not the cytotoxin responsible for the pathology and cell death measured in these assays. We constructed a specific mutation in exoT and showed that this strain, PA103 exoT::Tc, was cytotoxic in vitro and caused epithelial injury in vivo, indicating that another cytotoxin was responsible for the observed pathology. To identify the protein associated with acute cytotoxicity, we compared extracellular protein profiles of PA103, its isogenic non-cytotoxic derivative PA103 exsA::Ω and several cytotoxic and non-cytotoxic P. aeruginosa clinical isolates. This analysis indicated that, in addition to expression of ExoT, expression of a 70-kDa protein correlated with the cytotoxic phenotype. Specific antibodies to the 70-kDa protein bound to extracellular proteins from cytotoxic isolates but failed to bind to similar antigen preparations from non-cytotoxic strains or PA103 exsA::Ω. To clone the gene encoding this potential cytotoxin we used Tn5Tc mutagenesis and immunoblot screening to isolate an insertional mutant, PA103exoU:: Tn5Tc, which no longer expressed the 70-kDa extracellular protein but maintained expression of ExoT. PA103 exoU::Tn5Tc was non-cytotoxic and failed to injure the epithelium in an acute lung infection model. Complementation of PA103exoU::Tn5Tc with exoU restored cytotoxicity and epithelial injury. ExoU, ExoS and ExoT share similar promoter structures and an identical binding site for the transcriptional activator, ExsA, data consistent with their co-ordinate regulation. In addition, all three proteins are nearly identical in the first six amino acids, suggesting a common amino terminal motif that may be involved in the recognition of the type III secretory apparatus of P. aeruginosa.

    Notes: We report the observation of efficient coalescence reactions of fullerenes in the negative ion channel by laser desorption ionization of chemical adduct compounds of C60. Not only the even-numbered daughter fullerenes by successive C2 losses or captures appeared, but also odd-numbered carbon cluster anions C−N (51≤N≤65) were detected in the chemical-fusion processes. The results suggest that the anomaly is originated from the special reaction activity of nascent C60 produced by laser-induced dissociation of adduct compound molecules, and thereby provide a new way to open fullerene cages.

    Notes: We report that fullerenes (C60/C70) can be uniformly encased in silica aerogel by sol-gel process together with supercritical drying technique. Intense visible light emission (2.26 eV) is observable with the naked eye from the composite under an Ar+ laser (488 nm) excitation at room temperature. The luminescent intensity is found to increase strongly with low doping of fullerenes (0.05 mol %) and then to decrease while the peak is red shifted, and finally quenched upon heavy doping (up to 2.5 mol %). This effect is consistent with the behavior of the fullerenes entrapped in the micropores linked by the silica networks resulting in the quantum confinement effect which then produce emission far above the interband gap of C60/C70. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
