Description: Recent findings on the nature of magnetic field fluctuations in the high-latitude ionospheric regions have suggested the existence of scaling features, which are the signature of the occurrence of turbulence. These features mainly characterize the magnetic field fluctuations in those regions where the field-aligned currents flow. Here, we investigate the nature of the Earth's magnetic field fluctuations using the high-resolution (50 Hz) magnetic measurements from the European Space Agency Earth's observation mission Swarm. Our study indicates that spatiotemporal anomalous scaling features characterize low-frequency magnetic field fluctuations in the high-latitude ionospheric regions of field-aligned currents at spatial scales in the range 0.8–80 km (timescales in the range 0.1–10 s). The signature of a multifractal nature of these fluctuations suggests a highly complex structure of the field-aligned currents. Our results support the view of inhomogeneous (filamentary) field-aligned currents, which can have relevant implications in the comprehension of the physical processes responsible for the magnetospheric-ionospheric coupling and ionospheric heating.

Description: During a survey of Phytophthora diversity in natural ecosystems in Taiwan six new species were detected. Multigene phylogeny based on the nuclear ITS, ß-tubulin and HSP90 and the mitochondrial cox1 and NADH1 gene sequences demonstrated that they belong to ITS Clade 7a with P. europaea, P. uniformis, P. rubi and P. cambivora being their closest relatives. All six new species differed from each other and from related species by a unique combination of morphological characters, the breeding system, cardinal temperatures and growth rates. Four homothallic species, P. attenuata, P. flexuosa, P. formosa and P. intricata, were isolated from rhizosphere soil of healthy forests of Fagus hayatae, Quercus glandulifera, Q. tarokoensis, Castanopsis carlesii, Chamaecyparis formosensis and Araucaria cunninghamii. Two heterothallic species, P. xheterohybrida and P. xincrassata, were exclusively detected in three forest streams. All P. xincrassata isolates belonged to the A2 mating type while isolates of P. xheterohybrida represented both mating types with oospore abortion rates according to Mendelian ratios (4–33 %). Multiple heterozygous positions in their ITS, ß-tubulin and HSP90 gene sequences indicate that P. xheterohybrida, P. xincrassata and P. cambivora are interspecific hybrids. Consequently, P. cambivora is redescribed as P. xcambivora without nomenclatural act. Pathogenicity trials on seedlings of Castanea sativa, Fagus sylvatica and Q. suber indicate that all six new species might pose a potential threat to European forests.

Notes: This paper presents results on the magnetic properties of NiCu and NiCo alloys with compositions in the range 70%–100% Ni. Measurements include coercivity initial susceptibility, maximum differential susceptibility, magnetostriction, and Barkhausen effect emissions. Results revealed a surprising increase in the magnetostriction as a function of magnetic induction B as the copper content increased. The saturation magnetostriction λs was nevertheless found to decrease with copper content. The addition of cobalt reduced the magnitude of the magnetostriction resulting in a change of sign from negative to positive at between 20% and 30% cobalt. Coercivity was found to be little affected by elastic stress, but strongly affected by plastic deformation such as occurs, for example, in cold working. A similar result was true for initial susceptibility. Maximum differential susceptibility was, however, found to be strongly dependent on elastic stress. Results were interpreted in terms of stress induced uniaxial anisotropy. As the tensile stress increased the magnetization became more reversible, but the susceptibility decreased.

Notes: Measurements of magnetostriction λ, magnetic Barkhausen effect (MBE), and magnetic induction B have been made as a function of magnetic field H in a number of specimens of Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.9 prepared recently at Ames Laboratory. These results showed marked variations in properties from specimen to specimen. For example, the saturation magnetostriction of the materials under a compressive load of 14 MPa (2000 psi) varied from 1500 to 2200×10−6. However, it was noticed that in the high-performance, high-magnetostriction specimens a common feature was a very rapid change in magnetostriction with field in the range 400–500 Oe. Barkhausen measurements taken on two extreme specimens from the group also revealed very different signals, in particular the high-performance material was found to have a distinctive double peak in Barkhausen activity, one peak of which corresponded to the rapid change in magnetostriction, while the other occurred at the flat region of the magnetostriction versus field curve, corresponding to little or no change in magnetostriction.

Notes: Summary To examine genetic variation in the growth curve parameters and their contribution to factors determining grain yield, 40 randomly chosen F 7 lines of a cross between two contrasting rice varieties were measured for dry matter weight and for other yielding characters during the growing period. From the dry weight data, growth curves were computed using linear and quadratic (Pearl-Reed) logistic equations, and various values derived from them were compared among lines. The results showed that: 1) The growth curves of the lines varied genetically between the “early-vigor” and “sustained-vigor” types. 2) Total panicle length per unit area, representing the potentiality for carbohydrates to be produced in grains, seemed to depend on the growth rate at floral initiation, and panicle weight per unit length, representing the rate of carbohydrate supply to the panicles, seemed to depend on the growth rate at heading. These two values were negatively correlated. 3) “Early-vigor” types tended to produce more panicles but had a low rate of carbohydrate supply than “sustained-vigor” types. Either “potentiality” or “supply” was a limiting factor in grain production, depending upon the pattern of growth being either “early-vigor” or “sustained-vigor” type.
