Description: Ips typographus (Coleoptera, Scolytinae) is a spruce-infesting bark beetle that occurs throughout Europe and Asia. The beetle can cause considerable damage, especially when colonized trees are stressed and beetle populations increase. Although some studies have shown that populations of I. typographus in Europe, China and Japan are genetically distinct, these populations are biologically similar, including a strong association with ophiostomatoid fungi. To date, only two Leptographium spp. have been reported from the beetle in China, while 40 species have been reported from Europe and 13 from Japan. The aims of this study were to identify the ophiostomatoid fungal associates of I. typographus in north-eastern China, and to determine whether the fungal assemblages reflect the different geographical populations of the beetle. Field surveys in Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces yielded a total of 1 046 fungal isolates from 145 beetles and 178 galleries. Isolates were grouped based on morphology and representatives of each group were identified using DNA sequences of the ribosomal LSU, ITS, β-tubulin, calmodulin and elongation factor 1-α gene regions. A total of 23 species of ophiostomatoid fungi were identified, including 12 previously described species and 11 novel species, all of which are described here. The dominant species were Ophiostoma bicolor, Leptographium taigense and Grosmannia piceiperda D, representing 40.5 %, 27.8 % and 17.8 % of the isolates, respectively. Comparisons of species from China, Europe and Japan are complicated by the fact that some of the European and all the Japanese species were identified based only on morphology. However, assuming that those identifications are correct, five species were shared between Europe, Japan and China, two species were shared between China and Japan, five between Europe and China, and two between Europe and Japan. Consequently, Ips typographus populations in these different geographic areas have different fungal assemblages, suggesting that the majority of these beetle-associations are promiscuous. The results also suggested that the symbionts of the bark beetle do not reflect the population structures of the beetle. The use of fungal symbiont assemblages to infer population structures and invasion history of its vectors should thus be interpreted with circumspection.

Notes: Abstract Givenn demand points on the plane, the EuclideanP-Center problem is to findP supply points, such that the longest distance between each demand point and its closest supply point is minimized. The time complexity of the most efficient algorithm, up to now, isO(n 2 p−1· logn). In this paper, we present an algorithm with time complexityO(n 0(√P)).

Notes: Abstract In this paper we propose a new strategy for designing algorithms, called the searching over separators strategy. Suppose that we have a problem where the divide-and-conquer strategy can not be applied directly. Yet, also suppose that in an optimal solution to this problem, there exists a separator which divides the input points into two parts,A d andC d, in such a way that after solving these two subproblems withA d andC d as inputs, respectively, we can merge the respective subsolutions into an optimal solution. Let us further assume that this problem is an optimization problem. In this case our searching over separators strategy will use a separator generator to generate all possible separators. For each separator, the problem is solved by the divide-and-conquer strategy. If the separator generator is guaranteed to generate the desired separator existing in an optimal solution, our searching over separators strategy will always produce an optimal solution. The performance of our approach will critically depend upon the performance of the separator generator. It will perform well if the total number of separators generated is relatively small. We apply this approach to solve the discrete EuclideanP-median problem (DEPM), the discrete EuclideanP-center problem (DEPC), the EuclideanP-center problem (EPC), and the Euclidean traveling salesperson problem (ETSP). We propose $$O(n^{o(\sqrt P )} )$$ algorithms for the DEPM problem, the DEPC problem, and the EPC problem, and we propose an $$O(n^{o(\sqrt n )} )$$ algorithm for the ETSP problem, wheren is the number of input points.

Notes: Abstract We measured the vertical and horizontal movements of striped marlin (Tetrapturus audax) off the leeward coast of the Island of Hawaii between 20 November and 18 December 1992 while simultaneously gathering data on water temperature and oceanic currents. Fish movements were monitored by ultrasonic depth-sensitive transmitters, depth-temperature profiles by an expendable bathythermograph system, and oceanic current patterns by an acoustic Doppler current profiler. Like Indo-Pacific blue marlin (Makaira mazara), striped marlin near Hawaii spend 〉85% of their time in the mixed layer (i.e., above 90 m depth). The maximum depth for striped marlin appears to be limited by water temperatures 8 C° colder than the mixed layer, rather than by an absolute lower temperature. We also found that the horizontal displacements of some striped marlin can be strongly influenced by currents.

Notes: Nonclassical critical behavior gives rise to an apparent thermodynamic paradox near the critical point in many if not most two-component mixtures. This paradox occurs at both gas–liquid and liquid–liquid critical points. It is resolved by observing that in these mixtures the thermal expansion coefficient is negative sufficiently close to the critical point and diverges to −∞ there. As a consequence, the thermodynamic state is not uniquely determined by the variables P, v, x in the vicinity of the critical point. While for gas–liquid critical points the region in which this occurs is unobservably small, the predicted effect should be observable for liquid–liquid critical points.

Notes: We construct a microscopic model to describe the excited states of poly(2-methoxy, 5-(2′-ethylhexoxy)-p-(phenylenevinylene) in thin film. Within this model, we deduce that in the high energy region, the nature of excited states in the film is very similar to the species observed in solution phase. Moreover, we propose that the decay process of these excited states involves energy transfer, vibrational relaxation, and dissipation simultaneously, in contrast to the usual argument that assumes exciton migration occurs after vibrational motion reaches thermal equilibrium. As a result, the simulation of time-resolved photoluminescence spectra is in agreement with the experiment. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
