Description: The Irish–Scottish margin is geologically and oceanographically heterogeneous. Source waters of subpolar and subtropical origin interact with banks, seamounts, submarine canyon systems, escarpments, and mound provinces resulting in rich and diverse benthic communities that are influenced by local and regional hydrodynamics (e.g., internal waves, tides, and local turbulence). Reef habitats formed by the cold-water coral Desmophyllum pertusum are particularly well studied, such that controls on reef and mound formation are relatively well understood. The distribution of some other Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs), such as sponge fields formed by Pheronema carpenteri, and xenophyophore aggregations, is known due to both field observations and predictive modelling. Some VMEs are poorly known, for example, coral gardens, where in many cases even the characteristic species are not fully identified. The autecology of some component species has been studied, but for others, knowledge is almost completely lacking. The evidence for increased biodiversity associated with all these habitats is clear and all suffer anthropogenic impacts.

Notes: Summary The spatial distribution and species composition of high-Antarctic ichthyonekton was investigated during the EPOS 3 cruise by RV Polarstern in the eastern Weddell Sea during January–February 1989. A multiple rectangular midwater trawl was used to collect samples from the surface to near the sea floor at 11 stations along a 245 kra transect off Halley Bay. Early larval stages of 18 species, representing about 24% of the known Weddell Sea ichthyofauna, were present in the water column. The Antarctic silver-fish, Pleuragramma antarcticum, over-whelmingly dominated the catches comprising 84.5% of the 5022 specimens caught. The abundance of this species markedly increased towards the offshore end of the transect with the highest numbers occurring near the shelf-break front associated with the westerly current of the southern limb of the Weddell Gyre. The increased abundance of P. antarcticum in continental slope waters was attributed to deflection of the East Weddell Coastal Current beyond the shelf/slope break by fringing ice shelves. Most larval and juvenile fish were found in the seasonally warmed upper 0–70 m layer of the Antarctic Surface Water where conditions occurred that appeared to be favourable to both feeding and growth. Cluster analysis indicated that inner-, central-and outer-shelf assemblages were represented and that the species composition was most effectively described by reference to water mass and depth.

Notes: Abstract The study of anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation is progressing at a phenomenal rate, both experimentally and theoretically. These anisotropies can teach us an enormous amount about the way that fluctuations were generated and the way they subsequently evolved into the clustered galaxies which are observed today. In particular, on sub-degree scales the rich structure in the anisotropy spectrum is the consequence of gravity-driven acoustic oscillations occurring before the matter in the universe became neutral. The frozen-in phases of these sound waves imprint a dependence on many cosmological parameters, that we may be on the verge of extracting.

Notes: Summary Thirty one anaesthetists were supplied with a pharmacokinetic based target controlled propofol infusion system for evaluation. Twenty seven of 30 replies to a questionnaire sent to them indicated that the system had changed their use of propofol for maintenance of anaesthesia. The main reasons were greater ease of use and more confidence regarding the predictability of anaesthetic effects compared with manually controlled infusion. Data obtained from 770 patients anaesthetised with the system were analysed. The median maximum target concentration selected was 6.6 μg/ml. Younger patients (18–35 yr) required significantly greater target concentrations than older patients (65–80 yr). The mean time during which the system was in maintenance mode, when the predicted blood concentration of propofol was held constant for at least one minute, was 26.1 minutes. The median number of alterations in propofol concentration was 6. The target controlled infusion system provided an inexpensive and acceptable method of delivering intravenous anaesthesia.

Notes: Abstract A portable target controlled infusion system for propofol has been developed based on a Psion hand-held microcomputer and the Ohmeda 9000 syringe pump. The system uses a pharmacokinetic model which describes the distribution and elimination of propofol to achieve and maintain any selected target blood concentration. Target blood concentrations of 1 μg/ml, 3 μg/ml and 5 μg/ml were selected in laboratory trials and the cumulative volumes delivered by the Psion system each minute were compared with the theoretical output calculated by the pharmacokinetic model. The results obtained showed that the computer system delivered volumes which were always within 2% of the theoretical values. This system offers a convenient and simple method of maintaining anaesthesia using propofol.

Notes: Summary A Psion microcomputer controlled infusion system for alfentanil was assessed for the provision of post-operative analgesia in 14 patients who had undergone aortic bifurcation graft surgery. The system employed a pharmacokinetic model working in real time to deliver any selected target plasma concentration of alfentanil. The alfentanil infusion system was used for a mean time of 39 hours and for 96% of this time, patients were scored as having no pain or only mild pain. Severe pain was recorded for only 0.05% of the study time. The use of a pharmacokinetic delivery system may offer a convenient and simple method of providing postoperative analgesia with alfentanil.
