The book includes the papers presented at plenary sessions of the Third Congress of Soviet Oceanologists in Leningrad in December of 1987. The papers deal with three main groups of crucial oceanological problems related to study of the oceanic processes, conservation of nature and oceanic resources, and rational use of resources of the oceans. Most significant results achieved by the Soviet oceanologists since their Second Congress in 1982 are discussed, and the goals and perspectives of the Soviet oceanology determined.
