Notes: The thermal expansion of cyclopentadienylthallium, TlC5H5, was determined in the range 78 to 295 K, using X-ray powder diffractometry. Expansion is very anisotropic: α1 = 125 ± 12, α2 = 97 ± 5, α3 = 0 ± 4 (all 10−6 K−1). Directions and ratio of the two greatest expansion coefficients: α1 and α2, are explained by considering the shortest distances Tl+–Tl|+ in this ionic structure.

Notes: Using isomorphism properties of translation groups, an intrinsic definition of the classes of perfect objects belonging to n dimensional space, such as crystals, semicrystals, non-crystals and perfect gas, is given. Through the partition of space group G with respect to its (invariant) translation sub-group T, its point group is defined, an isomorph of the group of classes G/T. Examples are given, with symmorphic or non-symmorphic objects in spaces E2, E3, E4 and En. Moreover, the unsuitable expression 'Bravais lattice' should be changed into 'Bravais type of cell'.

Notes: The 001,100 and 102 X-ray diffraction lines from a powder sample of nickel hydroxide were measured and the data analysed using various measures of breadth. The specimen of Ni(OH)2 was obtained from the hydrolysis of nickel hydroxide nitrate. Corrections for instrumental and spectral broadening are made by means of the Stokes and LWL methods and also using the variances of the diffraction profiles. The two deconvolution methods are compared and information about the size and shape of the particles is also obtained. From the 001 and 100 lines it is shown that the crystallites approximate to cylindrical plates that are roughly circular or hexagonal in section, with a diameter of 388 Å and a mean height of 66 Å. This result is confirmed by the good agreement between the observed apparent size for the 102 line and the value calculated using the above dimensions. Consideration of the taper parameter in the variance method indicates that the cross section is not uniform in a direction perpendicular to the cylinder axis and the c axis of the unit cell, such as would occur if the ends of the cylinder were not planar.

Notes: A new goniometer for X-ray powder diffractometry and its setting are described. The diffraction angles are easily and quickly measured with high accuracy (10−3°&thgr;), even if experiments require the use of some large or heavy device such as a cryostat or furnace. An original mechanical design allows a direct measurement of the angular position, 20, of the receiving slit, by means of an incremental (10−3°) photoelectric encoder. Three independent stepping motors, for the &thgr; and 2&thgr; scans and the sample translation, allow one to define with a very good reproducibility the `zero' goniometer position. Diagrams of Pb3O4 and Pb(NO3)2 have been recorded in continuous scanning (0.05° &thgr;/min): differences between &thgr; of the two diffraction lines recorded on each side of the goniometer do not exceed ±2 × 10−3°, and reproducibility of measurements is better than +1 × 10−3°. Sensitivity of angular measurements is very good; it is proved by studying, in the range 9–40° (&thgr;), the thermal expansion of Pb(NO3)2 between 273 and 291 K. Moreover, use of a large radius (500 mm) and of a set of undivergent slits improves angular resolution, principally for &thgr;〈20°, which is very important for molecular-compound studies: an example is given showing diffraction line splitting due to a monoclinic triclinic phase transition.

Notes: About forty X-ray powder diagrams were recorded, in the range 5 to 295 K, with a prototype diffractometer and a high-efficiency cryostat. The temperature dependence of the cell parameters and the principal thermal expansion coefficients presents anomalies (below 240 K) which are due to the existence of an order–disorder transition in the range 240–170K. There is a correlation between the temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficients αhkl and the asymmetric broadening of corresponding peaks. The existence of domains and frontier zones and the important reorganization of the molecular packing, in the ordered phase, explain the asymmetrical broadening of peaks. The nickelocene molecular configuration is probably eclipsed (D5h) in the ordered phase.

Notes: From elementary equations it is possible to express the a, b, c cell parameters of the Pb3O4 orthorhombic phase as analytical functions of temperature. Analytical laws of the variation of thermal expansion coefficients are postulated. Models may be refined from experimental data. Analytical functions a(T) or b(T) explain the experimental laws of variation. The negative value of the ae coefficient of the orthorhombic phase is also justified.

Notes: Incommensurate modulated structures are no longer 'perfect' crystals in {\bb E}3, where {\bb E}n is the n-dimensional affine Euclidian space; on the other hand they are crystals in {\bb E}4, {\bb E}5 or {\bb E}6 whose cell is obtained from the experimental diffraction pattern in {\bb E}3. But Bragg's law is more general and it is shown that hyperplane incident waves are diffracted by sets of lattice hyperplanes of perfect crystals of {\bb E}n.

Notes: A geometrical 'WPV' notation for crystallographic point symmetry groups (PSG) in four-dimensional space is proposed. This simple notation generalizes the Hermann-Mauguin notation and makes it possible to retrieve the PSG elements easily. Tables classifying all elements of each PSG for systems 1 to 28 are presented. For higher systems, from 29 up to 33 inclusive, the results of the work are not reported owing to the space required, but they are at the disposal of the reader upon request.
