Notizen: The aim of this paper is to examine the determinants of Japanese net long-term capital flows in the 1980s and early 1990s. A basic framework is proposed which takes account of Japan's so-called land bubble by incorporating the interaction of land with the banking sector in a macroeconomic portfolio model of capital flows. Empirical evidence is supportive of the hypothesis that land-related bank loans have been a major determinant of Japanese net long-term foreign investment. the hypothesis of substitution between direct and indirect foreign investment also receives support, and areas of future research are mentioned.

Notizen: Abstract Fire and insects are natural disturbance agents in many forest ecosystems, often interacting to affect succession, nutrient cycling, and forest species composition. We review literature pertaining to effects of fire-insect interactions on ecological succession, use of prescribed fire for insect pest control, and effects of fire on insect diversity from northern and boreal forests in North America. Fire suppression policies implemented in the early 1900s have resulted in profound changes in forest species composition and structure. Associated with these changes was an increased vulnerability of forest stands to damage during outbreaks of defoliating insects. Information about the roles that both fire and insects play in many northern forests is needed to increase our understanding of the ecology of these systems and to develop sound management policies.

Notizen: Abstract Simulated large aspen tortrix (Choristoneura conflictana) herbivory of quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) induces significant increases in concentrations of two phenol glycosides, salicortin and tremulacin, in leaves within 24 hr. Crushing of leaf tissue, as must occur when aspen leaves are eaten by chewing insects such as the large aspen tortrix, results in conversion of salicortin and tremulacin to 6-hydroxy-2-cyclohexenone (6-HCH). Salicortin, tremulacin, 6-HCH, and its degradation product, catechol, are all toxic to the large aspen tortrix when fed on an artificial diet. These damage-induced chemical changes provide a plausible mechanism for short-term resistance induced in aspen leaves by insect herbivory.

Beschreibung: Direct solar radiation to the bark surface of white spruce, Piceaglauca (Moench) Voss, is the primary environmental factor influencing the developmental rate of spruce beetles, Dendroctonusrufipennis (Kirby), in Alaska. A phloem threshold temperature of 16.5 °C is required to initiate the development of 1 year life cycle beetles. Tree location within a stand and stand aspect in relation to direct solar radiation determine which trees or areas of the tree support beetles with 1- and 2-year life cycles. Two-year cycles normally developed on the north and west sides of standing trees and the north and bottom sides of felled trees, which were characterized by an average phloem temperature of 10.6 °C. One-year cycles normally developed on the south sides of standing trees and the south and top sides of felled trees, which were characterized by an average phloem temperature of 16.5 °C.

Beschreibung: Arthropod composition was similar in six vegetation types in a taiga ecosystem of Alaska. Four taxonomic classes representing 94 arthropod families were found at the herb, shrub, and tree levels of aspen (Populustremuloides Michx.), paper birch (Betulapapyrifera Marsh.), balsam poplar (Populusbalsamifera L.), white spruce (Piceaglauca (Moench) Voss), and black spruce (Piceamariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) vegetation types. Of all vegetation types, ground herbs contained the highest density of arthropods. Black spruce types had the highest arthropod densities at the tree level but the lowest diversity of species. Populations of arthropods were highest during June and July in hardwood types and during July and August in spruce types. Concentrations of sodium and magnesium increased as trophic levels increased; highest concentrations were in arthropod predators. Concentrations of potassium and calcium increased from the herbivore to the saprovore level. Annual element budgets for sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium are discussed.

Beschreibung: When white spruce is infested with spruce beetle broods, Dendroctonusrufipennis (Kirby), more beetles are produced than when Lutz and Sitka spruce are infested. In spite of host suitability differences, outbreaks of the spruce beetle have been more frequent and severe in stands of Lutz spruce than in white or Sitka spruce. Host suitability may be as important as host susceptibility and weather conditions in the development of spruce beetle outbreaks in south central Alaska. Cool summer temperatures and high precipitation limit the rate of development and growth of beetles in maritime Sitka spruce stands of southeast Alaska, but in white spruce stands of interior Alaska, cold winter temperatures usually help to maintain endemic levels. When these environmental factors are ameliorated, however, spruce beetle populations increase rapidly to epidemic levels.

Beschreibung: White spruce (Piceaglauca (Moench) Voss) stands in the Resurrection Creek watershed in south-central Alaska were infested by spruce bettles, Dendroctonusrufipennis Kirby, between 1974 and 1975. Thirty permanent plots were established within the infested area in 1976 to evaluate the immediate and long-term impact on white spruce stands. Plots were revisited annually for 5 years. Between 1976 and 1980, 29% of all white spruce was killed by spruce beetles. This loss accounted for 59% of the commercial white spruce volume in the watershed. Mortality was greatest in the larger diameter classes during the early part of the infestation, but smaller diameter trees were subsequently attacked as the number of noninfested trees declined. The impact of spruce beetles on structure and species composition of white spruce stands is given along with a discussion of management implications.

Beschreibung: Twenty-five variable sample plots were examined in mature white spruce (Piceaglauca (Moench) Voss) stands, in southcentral Alaska. These stands, located in the Canyon Creek – Quartz Creek valley on the Kenai Peninsula, have been infested by spruce beetle, Dendroctonusrufipennis (Kirby), since 1978. Diameter was not an important criterion for spruce susceptibility to attack or death unless large diameter was coupled with slower than average radial growth in the last 5 years, an apparent indicator of current tree vigor. A sigmoid transformation of percent mortality of spruce was inversely related to the logarithm of mean cumulative radial growth of spruce in the last 5 years and was directly related to number of spruce per hectare greater than 24.1 cm in diameter. This relationship is portrayed graphically as a rudimentary stand hazard rating model.

Beschreibung: A kraft pulping study on standing white spruce (Piceaglauca (Moench) Voss) killed by spruce beetles (Dendroetonusrufipennis (Kirby)) in south central Alaska showed no difference in pulp yield between trees dead for 1 year and those dead for as long as 50 years. Strength properties of beetle-killed white spruce remained extremely high in all dead trees regardless of how long they had been dead, so they apparently could be used for producing high-quality kraft pulps. These are the first results reported in which standing trees dead for as long as 50 years produced high-quality bleached and unbleached pulps.
