Summary The effects of aging and extraction on the polar and dispersion components of the surface free energy of redwood and Douglas-fir were investigated. Extracted Douglas-fir and extracted and unextracted redwood have similar dispersion and polar force contributions to the total surface free energy, with the polar forces marginally predominant. Unextracted Douglas-fir has predominantly dispersion forces, an observation probably related to low or nonpolar extractives in this species. Loss of surface free energy with aging appears to be related to environmental rather than wood factors.
