Description / Table of Contents: The author has investigated geometrical quantities of the spatial particle orbits of 2 - 10s microseisms. For stations in the interior of the Continent these orbits are plane and polarized. The polarization depends on the weather situation over the Northern Atlantic. The paper presents a new method for signal-to-noise ratio augmentation, which is based on the found polarization phenomenon. A chapter follows on nature and sources of microseisms.

Notes: Summary Based on a system of structurally simple postulations the kinematics of mantle convection is derived. With regard to the strain-stress relations valid in the mantle and the energy source of the convection the theory is without any presumptions. In compliance with recent hydrodynamic investigations the flow is introduced rather as roll currents than as a hexagonal cell pattern. From the feasible types of current a theoretical topography is derived which is in quantitative agreement with the observed one. Also the distribution of the seismic discontinuities substantiates the validity of the expression. Finally, some suggestions are given for a hydrodynamic theory of mantle convection. This paper contains that part of the theory which is necessary for testing the calculations, while the relationship of the theory to other geological and geophysical problems are dealt with by the author [26]2).

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The differential equations of convection are linearized and in this form solved for the following case: The lower and upper boundaries of a plane layer standing vertically in a homogeneous field of gravity and consisting of a Newtonian fluid are kept at constant temperaturesT 0 andT 1, respectively, withT 0〉T 1. Moreover, the fluid contains a heat-generating plane parallel to the boundaries. This plane is assumed not to be shifted by the setting-in currents nor will it hinder them mechanically. Under these conditions convectionrolls can developbelow and above the heat-generating plane, which are tangent to each other at the heat-generating plane. The hydrodynamical theory advanced here shows an analogy to the kinematic theory of mantle convection.

Notes: Summary First of all it is shown that the nine fundamental suppositions of the kinematic theory of the mantle convection fit well into the image which is obtained from the mantle by other geophysical results. The question of episodicity of the orogenesis is dealt with in connection with the questions of steadiness and unsteadiness of the convection. Moreover it is shown that the ocean-spreading theory and the kinematic mantle convection theory are compatible with each other in their main aspects and that they complement each other.

Notes: Summary The hypothesis is developed that convection takes place continuously in the upper mantle and episodically also in the lower mantle. The reason for the latter assumption is seen in the temperature dependence of the viscosity. By radioactive heating of the lower mantle the viscosity gradually decreases until the critical Rayleigh number is achieved. The lower mantle convection initiated in this way, however, disappears after sufficient heat has been transferred to the exterior. This heat transfer becomes evident by an increase of igneous and tectonic activities in the crust.
