Description: In this work, we introduce the history and mechanisms of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), discuss various techniques for fabrication of state-of-the-art SERS substrates, and review recent work on robotizing plasmonic nanoparticles, especially, the efforts we made on fabrication, characterization, and robotization of Raman nanosensors by design. Our nanosensors, consisting of tri-layer nanocapsule structures, are ultrasensitive, well reproducible, and can be robotized by either electric or magnetic tweezers. Three applications using such SERS nanosensors were demonstrated, including location predictable detection, single-cell bioanalysis, and tunable molecule release and monitoring. The integration of SERS and nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) devices is innovative in both device concept and fabrication, and could potentially inspire a new device scheme for various bio-relevant applications.

Description: Photonic bandgap fiber optic gyroscope (PBFOG) is a novel fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) with excellent environment adaptability performance compared to a conventional FOG. In this work we find and investigate the backward secondary-wave coherence (BSC) error, which is a bias error unique to the PBFOG and caused by the interference between back-reflection-induced and backscatter-induced secondary waves. Our theoretical and experimental results show a maximum BSC error of ~4.7°/h for a 300-m PBF coil with a diameter of 10 cm. The BSC error is an important error source contributing to bias instability in the PBFOG and has to be addressed before practical applications of the PBFOG can be implemented.

Description: To collect important health information, WBAN applications typically sense data at a high frequency. However, limited by the quality of wireless link, the uploading of sensed data has an upper frequency. To reduce upload frequency, most of the existing WBAN data collection approaches collect data with a tolerable error. These approaches can guarantee precision of the collected data, but they are not able to ensure that the upload frequency is within the upper frequency. Some traditional sampling based approaches can control upload frequency directly, however, they usually have a high loss of information. Since the core task of WBAN applications is to collect health information, this paper aims to collect optimized information under the limitation of upload frequency. The importance of sensed data is defined according to information theory for the first time. Information-aware adaptive sampling is proposed to collect uniformly distributed data. Then we propose Adaptive Sampling-based Information Collection (ASIC) which consists of two algorithms. An adaptive sampling probability algorithm is proposed to compute sampling probabilities of different sensed values. A multiple uniform sampling algorithm provides uniform samplings for values in different intervals. Experiments based on a real dataset show that the proposed approach has higher performance in terms of data coverage and information quantity. The parameter analysis shows the optimized parameter settings and the discussion shows the underlying reason of high performance in the proposed approach.

Description: Energies, Vol. 11, Pages 1699: An Energy Optimization Strategy for Hybrid Power Ships under Load Uncertainty Based on Load Power Prediction and Improved NSGA-II Algorithm Energies doi: 10.3390/en11071699 Authors: Diju Gao Xuyang Wang Tianzhen Wang Yide Wang Xiaobin Xu In this paper, a hybrid ship powered by diesel generator sets and power batteries in series is considered. By analyzing the characteristics of hybrid ship cycle operating conditions, the load power of the hybrid ship under load uncertainty is firstly predicted. Then, considering the economy, emissions and continuous navigation time (endurance) of the hybrid ship, an energy optimization strategy based on the predicted load power is proposed to achieve the goal of minimum fuel consumption, minimum emissions and maximum endurance of ship operation. The experimental results show that, compared with the fuzzy logic rules based strategy, the fuel economy of the ship is increased by 9.6% and the ship’s endurance is increased by 24% for the proposed strategy.

Description: Sensors, Vol. 17, Pages 1899: Measurement of the Verdet Constant of Polarization-Maintaining Air-Core Photonic Bandgap Fiber Sensors doi: 10.3390/s17081899 Authors: Ningfang Song Xiaoyang Wang Xiaobin Xu Wei Cai Chunxiao Wu We propose a method based on the white-light interference technique for measuring the Verdet constant of a polarization-maintaining air-core photonic bandgap fiber (PM-PBF). The experimental results show that the Verdet constant of the PM-PBF is ~3.3 mrad/T/m for the broadband light with a spectral width of ~38 nm and a mean wavelength of ~1550 nm, which is ~124 times less than that of a conventional stress-induced birefringent fibers called PANDA fibers (~0.41 rad/T/m for the same broad-spectrum light). The results indicate that the nonreciprocal error induced by the Faraday effect in a fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) made of the PM-PBF is theoretically ~25 times less than that of a conventional FOG made of the PANDA fiber when other conditions, such as the fiber twist, fiber coil area, and so on, are the same.

Description: A wire rope continuously variable transmissions (WR-CVT) has been introduced in the paper, in view of its less research, this paper mainly studied the deformation distribution of 6×7+IWS bending wire rope. The results shown that in the same section, half of the side strands are in a stretched state and half are in a compressed state. When the transmission ratio i=2.35, the maximum deformation and the minimum deformation are decrease when section U1 to U2, U3 transition. Wire deformation distribution when the transmission ratio i=0.42 is similar to that of i=0.2.35. Wire deformation amount and the deformation difference decrease as the transmission ratio decreases, this shows that the increase in the bending radius of the wire will make the wire deformation more uniform, and the reduction of the deformation difference will also reduce the wear. This study provides a basis for the study of fatigue and wears failure of WR-CVT components.

Description: A wire rope continuously variable transmissions (WR-CVT) has been introduced in the paper, in view of its less research, this paper mainly studied the stress distribution of 6×7+IWS bending wire rope. The results shown that the wire stress is layered distribution in each section, the stress at the outer strand center wire and outer strand side wire was the greatest, the stress value of the outer strand side wire and metal block circular notch is second. As the transmission ratio decreases, the wire stress decreases, which is related to the pulley working radius increases. Compared with the section A1, the stress value on the section A2 is smaller, mainly because the section A2 is not in contact with the metal block or the contact pressure is small. This study provides a basis for the study of fatigue and wears failure of WR-CVT components.
