Description / Table of Contents: After a review of basic concepts in multiple criteria optimization, the paper presents a characterization of noncooperative equilibria in multiple criteria games in normal form either by weighted sums or by order-consistent achievement scalarizing functions, for convex and nonconvex cases. Possible applications of multiple criteria games and such characterizations of their equilibria are indicated. The analysis of multiple criteria games night be especially useful when studying reasons of possible conflict escalation processes and ways of preventing them.

Description / Table of Contents: A new interactive multiple objective programming procedure is developed that combines the strengths of the Interactive Weighted Tchebycheff Procedure (Steuer and Choo 1983) and the Interactive FFANN Procedure (Sun, Stam and Steuer 1993). In this new procedure, nondominated trial solutions are generated by solving Augmented Weighted Tchebycheff Programs (Steuer 1986), based on which the decision maker articulates his/her preference information by assigning "values" to these solutions or by making pairwise comparisons. The elicited preference information is used to train a feed-forward artificial neural network, which in turn is used to screen new trial solutions for presentation to decision maker in the next iteration. Computational results are reported, comparing the current procedure with the Interactive Weighted Tchebycheff Procedure and the Interactive FFANN Procedure. The results show that this new procedure yields good quality solutions.

Description / Table of Contents: When a real world problem is formulated as a linear programming model, we are often faced with difficulties in the parameter specification. We might know the plausible values or the possible ranges of parameters, but there still remains uncertainty. The parameter values could be obtained more exactly by experiments, investigations and/or inspections. However, to make such an experiment, investigation or inspection, expenses would be necessary. Because of capital limitations, we cannot invest in all possible experiments, investigations and inspections. Thus, we have a selection problem, which uncertainty reduction is the most profitable. In this paper, we discuss an analytic approach to the problem. Because of the difficulty of the global analysis, we make a local analysis around appropriate values of parameters. We focus on giving the decision maker useful information for the selection. First, sensitivity analyses with respect to the uncertain parameters are developed. The sensitivities are available only for the marginal domain without changing the optimal basis. The domain is obtained as an interval. The difficulty of the sensitivity analysis is in the cases of degeneracy and multiplicity of the optimal solutions. A treatment of such difficult cases is proposed. Finally, a numerical example is given for illustrating the proposed approach.

Description / Table of Contents: Reservoir management is inherently multi-criterial, since any release decision involves implicit trade-offs between various conflicting objectives. The release decision reflects concerns such as flood protection, hydroelectric power generation, dilution of downstream wastewater and heat effluents, downstream municipal, agricultural and industrial water supply, environmental standards and recreational needs. This paper presents a framework for analysing trade-offs between several decision criteria, and includes the management of heated effluents from downstream thermoelectric power generation in an optimisation model for reservoir management. The model is formulated and analysed in an interactive multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) modelling framework. Rather than providing specific target levels or ad hoc constants in a Goal Programming framework, as proposed elsewhere, our multi-criteria framework suggests a systematic way of evaluating trade-offs by progressive preference assessment. The MCDM model, based on a Tchebycheff metric and a contracted cone approach, is learning-oriented and permits a natural exploration of the decision space while maintaining non-dominated decisions. A detailed case study of the Shellmouth Reservoir in Manitoba, Canada, serves as an illustration of the model.KEYWORDS: reservoir management, multi-criteria decision making, systems analysis, operations research, multi-objective linear programming, interactive weighted Tchebycheff procedure, thermoelectric power generation

Description / Table of Contents: Modeling and simulation of various physical, environmental or socioeconomic processes is often a preliminary step for using the resulting models in decision support. With the advancements of computing technology and the methodology of decision support, it is now necessary to revise basic approaches to modeling and simulation: from the very beginning of model construction, they should aim at multi-objective analysis of the model while taking into account various optimization, sensitivity analysis and symbolic manipulation techniques treated as tools of such an analysis, not as goals. The paper illustrates how such an approach could increase the opportunities of comprehensive analysis of a model from a selected class -- as an example, the class of nonlinear dynamic discrete-time models was chosen. A user-friendly format of formulating such models is discussed together with related problems of inverse, constrained and multi-objective simulation as well as structural differentiation and sensitivity analysis, fuzzy set processing and other related issues. As a new tool for the analysis of boundaries of sets generated by such models -- for example. the a-level sets of fuzzy membership functions -- an interactive method of using an elastic "electronic pencil" is proposed.
